Done Dirty

I'm still reeling quite a bit from the events of this past weekend. One specific game in particular. I'll get to that in a bit. This was one of the few weekends that my wife and I found ourselves home in the afternoon to actually sit and enjoy some sports. I know I have posted in the past about watching college football out on our deck, but that's usually not the case. We have recently been blessed with some quite pleasant weather that made that possible.

However, this weekend a late summer heatwave pushed into the area and we were resigned to have the A/C on. I have a feeling next weekend I will be watching the games with a TV on one side of me and a roaring fire on the other side of me. It's supposed to get a big chilly for our camping trip.

There were two massive upsets and one minor upset that I have to highlight from this past weekend. The first is the one that still has me a bit shook even though I honestly should have known better. After their previous weeks loss to USC, number 7 Penn State got stunned in California this past weekend by a UCLA team that is 0-4 on the season. Needless to say, after their 42 to 37 beating by the Bruins, the Nittany Lions have been knocked out of the top 25.

This is just another example of how Penn State chokes. Actually, they usually choke in big games, but this wasn't even one of those. It should have been a steamroller of a game for them, but now, who knows.

The minor upset this weekend was Cincinnati taking down number 14 Iowa State 38 to 30 and dropping them down to the number 22 spot at the beginning of this week.

The other big upset was number 9 Texas getting slapped 29 to 21 by Florida. This Longhorn loss drops them out of the top 25 as well. Yikes Arch Manning. That's a bit embarrassing...

Everything else went about the way you would expect it would in the top 25. Even the game that I thought might be close at the end of last week turned out to be great big nothing-burgers. Texas Tech beat Houston 35 to 11, and Texas A&M beat Mississippi State 31 to 9.

My nieces went to the Virginia Tech game vs. Wake Forest and they got treated to Hokie loss 30 to 23. I actually find that a bit surprising. I was watching part of that game and it looked like Virginia Tech was in control at the beginning of the second half.

Finally, I'd be remiss if I didn't give mention to my Michigan State Spartans. I actually didn't expect them to win this game against Nebraska, but they weren't looking too bad for the first half of the game. Unfortunately, things kind of went off the rails and they ended up losing 38 to 27. Congrats @gooddream! It kind of feels like the Corn Huskers are finally returning to their former glory.

It's been a rough road for them since they joined the Big Ten.

As for MSU... I don't know what to say. They weren't horrible, but they weren't great either. I have a feeling before too long people are going to start asking some hard questions of the coach. Second year in the position or not. They should be improving right? Chiles just seems to be getting worse and I don't really know how to take that...
