I'm not going to lie and say I had high hopes going into the afternoon yesterday. As much as I don't want to admit it, the Guardians have proven they are a pretty decent team towards the end of this season. I was certainly hoping that the Tigers would wrap things up and get ready to move on to the next round of the playoffs, but a 6 to 1 thrashing by Cleveland wasn't in the books for me.
Honestly, I don't think it was in the books for the Tigers either. For most of the game the score tied 1 to 1. It wasn't until the 8th or 9th inning that Cleveland finally pulled ahead with their huge win.
I think a lot of it goes back to the play in the earlier innings where the Tigers scored two runs to go up 2 to 1 only to have one of the runs taken off the board due to a challenge by Cleveland. Yes, the runner was probably out at third, but I really feel like the second runner crossed home plate before that out happened.
Clearly they felt differently and we sat at the 1 to 1 tie. The crazy thing is, I feel like Cleveland did a pretty good job of depleting their bull pen yesterday, so it makes me wonder what kind of talent they are going to have available for the game today.
It looks like today's tie breaker game between the Tigers and the Guardians starts two hours later at 3 PM instead of 1 PM like the last two. I might actually be able to catch most of it at home versus in my office.
Meanwhile, in other Wild Card news, San Diego beat the Cubs 3 to 0 to even up that series. Likewise, the Yankees beat the Red Sox 4 to 3 to tie up that series. I was watching part of that game and it's kind of scary just how good both teams are. I can understand now why the Yankees had some pretty good odds from Vegas to win the whole thing this year even though they were pretty far back in the standings.
Say what you want about, them, and hate them as much as I do, the Yankees know how to build a team. Way to go George Costanza assistant to the traveling secretary...
Meanwhile, the Dodgers Reds game also went about the way I expected. If you go back to my post yesterday you will see that I said LA would probably close their series up in two games. That's exactly what happened with them winning 8 to 4 over Cincinnati.
That sets The Dodgers up with a Saturday game 1 against the Phillies.
According to my numbers, LA is still the favorite to win the World Series with a +375 line.
I guess we will have to wait and see how that all turns out...
