Dear Dad & Mom

When I was in secondary school, I used to believe that it was my parents’ responsibility to train me because they gave birth to me. They have a mandate to give me the good sides of life, such as sponsoring me to a quality school, buying me food and clothing, giving me pocket money, and ensuring I never lacked anything. I was made to believe that, and because that was the culture I grew up in, my belief felt right.

But when I entered the university, I saw a different kind of life which made me more appreciative. Because even though it is truly my parents' responsibility to take care of me, they could have decided, maybe due to their low level of financial capability, to give me a shallow lifestyle: such as refusing to pay my school fees because they didn’t have money, and making me repeat classes because of that, or even refusing to clothe me. All these could have happened, and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything if they had decided to raise me that way.

But they didn’t. Rather, they saw me through various stages of my life with excess love. And below is a letter to them, showing my appreciation:

"Dear Mom and Dad,This is just a piece of words to say thank you for all you’ve done for me. Where I am now, whenever I look back to where it all started, how you saw me through all levels, even in the days and years when it looked like the future was blocked due to poor performances in school, you stayed put with encouragement, love, and continuous spending on my needs. Thank you so much!

I must say, I’m a lucky person to have come into this world in the hands of the best parents ever. This is not a brag, because I have seen things happening in the world, and I have all the reasons to appreciate God for bringing me into this world through both of you. In the next world, I would still love to be born by you and exist there in your arms.

Right now, it may look like you’re not going to reap the fruit of your labour, but that’s a lie. Life will click the way I’m expecting it to, and you both are going to feel that all your contributions of love, care, and parenting were never a waste of time.

I love you a bunch. Please check your account for a little tip that accompanied this letter. See you during the Christmas holidays."

Thanks!
