The topic of being broke has always been a hot one. Different people have their own way of defining it. Some believe being broke is when your account balance is red, while others see it as not being able to meet your financial obligations. For me as a guy, being broke is not really about the numbers in my account. It hits me differently it’s simply when I cannot eat what I want, at the time I want it
I will explain. Money, no matter how much or how little, is supposed to give you options. Once that freedom of choice is gone, then I feel completely broke. Imagine craving a particular meal, say you want to grab a plate of rice and chicken from your favorite spot or even just buy a proper swallow with soup but your pocket tells you to settle for bread and beans instead
It’s not only about food though, but food is where it shows up first. As a guy, I don’t like calculating too much when hunger strikes. I just want to go and buy whatever my body feels like eating. But once I have to start running mental arithmetic and thinking, If I eat this now, will I still have enough left for transport tomorrow? that’s when I know the struggle is real
I had an experience not long ago that really brought this definition home. I was hungry after work and badly wanted to stop by a restaurant to eat something nice. But looking at the cash I had left, I realized that buying that meal would affect my transport for the next two days. I ended up walking past the restaurant and going home to boil garri. That moment didn’t just make me hungry, it made me feel broke in every sense of the word
The funny thing is, you don’t even need to have zero naira before you know you’re broke. You can still be holding #15,000 or #20,000, but if that money is already committed to other things, it’s as good as not having it. Because in reality, you can’t touch it for the small things that bring daily satisfaction. That’s why I say being broke for me is not about the account balance, it’s about the lack of financial freedom
Some people measure their level of being broke by the figure they have left, but for me it’s more about what I can or cannot afford to do at the time. Once my choice is limited, especially with food, I know I am broke. It’s not a pleasant feeling, but it’s something we all experience from time to time
At the end of the day, everyone has their own scale. But for me as a guy, being broke is simply not having the power to satisfy my hunger when it calls
