A World without Poverty

I just finished reading a novel titled Adanna. Ever since I finished it, I have been perplexed. The protagonist had a happy ending eventually, but she had to go through so much because she and her family were poor.

It’s sad how we wake up to new problems each and everyday. If you had the chance to eliminate one global issue from the world, which one would it be and why?

If I ever had the chance to eliminate any global issue, I would eliminate poverty. Poverty is the root of all evil, if it is eliminated, the world will be a better place.

In that book, we could see a 16-year-old girl who was married off to a man old enough to be her grandfather. She made this sacrifice to pay up her father's loan and to save her dying sister. She was constantly abused by her supposed stepson under the same roof, with her so-called husband who turned a blind eye to her pain.

Sexual abuse wasn't the only ordeal she had to endure; she also had to endure domestic violence, humiliation, cruelty, and many more. Adanna's only crime was that she and her family were POOR

Now, this is a work of fiction, but sadly, it is the reality of so many people. People go through a lot just because they are poor.

Just like the old lady in Straw said, "People don't know how expensive it is to be poor." Poverty doesn't just mean not having money to fend for yourself, it also entails the battle of your present "brokeness" to navigate life and everything it throws at you. Imagine not having money but you need to get your inhaler so you don’t die. Poverty is expensive in its own way too, sad but the truth.

The hardship out there is more severe than you can think or imagine. People are constantly fighting to survive out there.

When people are poor, they are open to doing all kinds of things, and that includes the good, the bad, and the ugly. A poor man is pushed to a point where he isn't bothered about the consequences of his actions. He becomes emotionally numb, and his only goal is to get out of his current predicament by any means.

With poverty gone, sick people would have the money they need to seek professional help. Mortality rates will reduce, as well as crime rates, making it easier for us to coexist without constantly watching our backs in anticipation of the next crime.

If you've ever been poor, you would understand that life can be very unfair to some people, and you begin to wonder how fortunate a lot of people are and how unfortunate others are.

Poverty has done a lot to our society; it has stripped people of their dignity, and rendered people completely helpless and hopeless. I would love to eliminate it without thinking twice!
