Who Did You Imagine Yourself As Growing Up?

Growing up, imagination was something that never left me alone. As kids, we always had this habit of dreaming, pretending and sometimes even creating stories in our heads. I remember those days when I would sit quietly and picture myself as another person entirely. Sometimes it was a real person, other times it was a character I saw in one movie or book.

Looking back now, I see those imaginations were not just ordinary play. They were small windows into the things I admired and wished for in life. Every child pass through that stage where they want to be like someone else. For me, it happen many times.

As a kid, one of the people I imagined myself as was a superhero. I used to watch plenty action cartoons and I loved the idea of having powers. Flying in the sky, saving people, everybody admiring you, it was such a sweet thought. I even run around the house with cloth on my neck like cape, believing I was already one superhero.

Apart from superheroes, I also imagined myself as one of my teachers in school. Funny thing is, it was not because I loved school too much, but because I liked the way he commanded respect. Anytime he walk into class, everywhere just go silent. I wanted that kind of confidence. In my eyes that time, it was like super power.

There were also moments I pictured myself as musician. Growing up, I loved music too much. Watching artists perform on TV and seeing crowd scream their names, I always thought it must be sweet to be in their shoes. I would hold broom, spoon or anything that looks like microphone and start singing like stage performance. Thinking about it now, it’s funny but I know many kids did same.

When I grew older, my imagination change small. I stopped thinking of being superhero or musician, and I started thinking about being successful in business. Someone that control his time and his life. Maybe that was life teaching me that childhood dream is good, but reality will always shape what we truly want.

Now, if I had chance to be another person today, I don’t think I will choose superhero or even one famous person. I will just want to be another version of me wiser, richer, and more fulfilled. Instead of being another person, I just want to be better me. Someone who don’t repeat same mistakes, who achieve more and still live with peace of mind.

But still, I no go lie, sometimes I look at great leaders, successful people or even simple people that live happy life without stress, and I say, “If only I can trade place with them for one day.” Just to feel how it is to live in their shoes.

At the end of everything, imagination is part of life. As kids, it was superheroes and role models. As adults, it is dream of a better life and better self. So if you ask me now who I want to be, I will just say me, but the greater version of me that I’m still working towards everyday.
