Academy Award for Best Actress 2023 | A Quick Sketch of Michelle Yeoh

It's almost midnight here in Malaysia. It has been a long and tiring day. I have been up since 5.30am this morning to prepare my daughter for her school orientation day. She completed her primary school education last month and after one month holiday, the new school term is scheduled to begin next Monday. Since I wrote about that in yesterday's post, let's not talk about that here.

Is anyone following the latest news from Hollywood? I'm no fan of Hollywood since I shifted my taste in entertainment to K-Wave several years ago. But this year's Academy Awards caught my (and most Malaysian's) attention when our very own Hollywood star, Michelle Yeoh won the Best Actress! Wooohoooo!!! Congratulations Michelle, I'm so proud of you! And thank you for the inspiring speech:

Thank you. Thank you. For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight—this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that—dream big, and dreams do come true. And ladies, don’t let anybody tell you, you are ever past your prime. Never give up! ~ Michelle Yeoh

Many Malaysians congratulated her on her winning but many are skeptical and criticized her as well. See, Michelle is Malaysian and she never denies that but she built her early career in Hong Kong before achieving her dreams in Hollywood. She never acted in Malaysian-made films or things like that. Some Malaysians questioned her contribution to the country. Some criticized her for her political choices in the past. Some bigot even said in the news that "it is a sin" to be proud of her accomplishment 😡

Malaysians can be extremely judgmental and toxic 😫

Ughh...why can't we just be proud of a successful fellow Malaysian? What did her political choices get to do with her winning the Oscar? What is so wrong with congratulating her? She never forces anyone to be her fan or watch her movies 🤦‍♀.

Some people really can't shut their mouths when they have nothing nice to say 🤷‍♀.

Oh well...
