Money Vs Character: Integrity and Accountability - Building your character base for the future

Many people as we speak are just after how to become rich in two seconds and after a little while, they become broke. Getting rich to me isn't the problem in life, what really matters is your ability to sustain the wealth you've acquired.

In Nigeria where I come from, there's this image pursuing public office holders and that's the inability for them to be accountable for the finance and other assets that's in their custody.

During the heat of the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, a Permanent Secretary in the ministry of finance in a bid to answer questions relating to some billions of naira, she said that python swallowed the money and funny enough, this became the order of the day by public office holders.

What's Integrity?
To me integrity is the ability to say no to an ill-fated situation even when you are in dare need of either finance or other material wealth.

Materialism and the get rich quick syndrome has caused a lot of people to drop their sense of integrity to the ground.

Corruption has eaten deep into the fabrics of Nigerians and this has made peoples all over the world to conclude that all Nigerians are corrupt. The growth of corruption is just the inabilities of people to build character rather than acquiring wealth for themselves.

The question is, what should one pursue, money or character?

I'll say that if you have the capacity to control both pursue both, but if I many choose which one to come first, then I'll say character should be in front. It's my opinion, you can make yours.

Why character?

Give 1 million dollars to a teenager without experience in the area of financial management, in the next 2 years, he'll come back to you for help. This is because he hasn't developed the character base to handle such an amount of money.

Today the world has changed, people no longer want to develop character before pursuing money. This has become worst since the inception of crypto in the world. Both the amateur wants to become rich through the acquisitions of cryptocurrencies. Crypto on its own isn't bad, but character will help one to sustain the wealth.

Accountability shouldn't be left aside in the process of building a character base for oneself.

The ability to tell what, how and when a particular amount of money is used for is what I call accountability.

Many people lacks this quality. Just send a little child on an errand, after the process, you'll observe that the child will keep the change until you ask for it. That's a very bad way to start life from that tender age.

I'll end this post by saying that, being in search of money isn't a bad thing because you'll always need money to execute your needs on a daily basis, but building character in ones early stage of he's or her life will help preserve the wealth for a longer period of time.
