Uncle Kenny began his florist career just immediately he graduated from high school, according to him, his love for flowers made him venture into the flower business and he sure does so well at his career.
I and my mom who happened to be his sister went visiting him and his household one Sunday afternoon after service, and as soon I arrived at his compound, I couldn't help but admire how beautifully adorn it was, there were different colors of flowers, of different shape and sizes and the most beautiful thing about it was the accuracy of spacing.
"Dayumm, this is very beautiful," I goshed over the beauty of the flowers as I touched each one of them. I had no idea Uncle Kenny was beside the window looking at me.
I kept touching the flowers and admiring it, "mom, this is so beautiful," I called my mom's attention to a particular specie.
"Yeah, it's very pretty," She looked away and headed for their door.
"Mom, you know I have always admired pretty flowers, but I am just too lazy to plant and nurture one in our compound, it must have cost Uncle Kenny lots of work," I brought out my phone to take shots of them as I was a die hard fan of nature and it's beauty.
"Yes, Amie, it took me lot of patience and hard work to nurture them and see how you're goshing all over them now? " Uncle Kenny's voice resounded through the window which was when I realized he had been looking at me for a while.
"You're really doing a nice job Uncle, but why not, it's your profession, " I said casually and then I headed for the door too.
"Do you really love what you see and you want it?" His hands were already pointing towards the direction of the flowers as I walked closer to the door.
"Yes Uncle, I really do love what I see, " I nodded in affirmative.
"If you want it, then put in the work," He replied firmly.
"You see my dear, nothing good comes easily, we must work hard for to get the things we want, a little drop of water on the seedlings every morning is not too much or is it?" by this time, he was already at the doorway, his hands placed on my shoulder as he walked me around his compound.
"There are so many benefits of having flowers in your compound, for beautification, clarity, purification, and to help the eco-system, and more to that people would stop by your house to give you a free compliment of how great your compound is and that will leave you with a beautiful smile and an enhanced mood, aren't they worth the effort?" His eyes were now fixed on me.
"Hmmm, it's really worth the effort, Would you give me some to go home with?" I agreed to put in the work because Uncle Kenny's word was a wake-up call to beautifying my compound with flowers .
"Of course, I will, which of them do you want?" He began to point at the flowers he felt caught my eyes, "this one?"
"Yes, this one, and that one too, " I pointed to the two species I goshed over initially.
I began imagining how beautifully adorn my compound would look after they had all grown, "it wouldn't take much of my time, just to water and nurture every morning," I whispered beneath my breath.
"Okay darling, can we go in and meet your aunt too, your cousins aren't around, I sent them on an errand, so you might be a little bored," We both walked into the house where my mom was already seated having a discussion with my aunt.
My mind was still pondering on how a little admiration could lead to a little conversation that stuck with me through out my stay in their house, "nothing good comes easily, if you want it, put in the work".
Although, that word was a call to action to begin beautifying my compound, it was deeper for me, for everytime I want something so badly, those words came to mind and it motivated me to get to work, rather than merely wish for things to happen without putting effort.
It was a beautiful encounter I had with Uncle Kenny even though he had no idea how much those words still ring a bell in my mind till this very day, it was indeed a wake-up call to go for what I really love even though it requires sweat.
Flowers are beautiful, to grow one would be an exciting thing to do.
Glad his words put you to work.
