Even if we could meet halfway and compromise on things, this is how the world used to work. Divisiveness is precisely the problem with everything these days.
I read an article recently about soft succession here in the US. It was quite interesting. I guess it's already underway. The Democratic governors are meeting regularly together to figure out ways to self-govern independent of the Republican leadership in Washington.
The author of the article believes this could lead to a full-on succession that would look like something similar to this map. Honestly, considering the striking differences in ideas and opinions this is the only path forward I see unless some miracle happens. I'm working on a post about this very thing now.
I don't think Michigan would necessarily go the way people think it would go. The government might be leaning one day, but the majority of the country folk lean the other way. It it weren't for the more populate areas, things would be much different. Probably similar in a lot of states.
