Behind the headlines: my interview with Arlindo Cruz - Week 202

Embarrassing moments are part of our almost daily routine, and at work, it's not much different. Depending on the profession, I believe it can even happen more frequently in our careers. One of those moments, which I'll never forget, happened to me during the coverage of an event, I think in 2013, in Cabo Frio, at a series of summer shows that took place on the beach, with the support of the municipal government.

On one of the days, the main attraction was Arlindo Cruz. A renowned Brazilian singer, songwriter, and musician, even more known in the samba and pagode scene.

Oh, to give context, I was working at the time as a reporter for a local TV station.

On this specific day, my mission was to interview Arlindo before the show. As I had done on the previous days, the experience was very exciting and rewarding, but it ended up being a big challenge.

During the interview, the artist was not at all warm. He was distant and unresponsive. Despite my several attempts to establish a connection and start a very friendly conversation, his responses were short and monosyllabic.

While I tried to keep my composure and continue with the interview as best as possible, the feeling of embarrassment grew with each passing minute.

How would I turn this terrible interview into an interesting piece for the viewers?

Luckily, we managed to gather footage from the show, from the moments he sang his most famous songs, from the interaction with the audience, and in the end, everything worked out.

But undoubtedly, for a reporter, interviewing someone who has no desire to be there and only gives short and evasive answers is very embarrassing.

I hope not to go through this situation again anytime soon.
