AN IMPROMPTU WORK DECISION

Waking up on a Sunday morning after a work free Saturday where nothing really happened because we had just completed a particular project and most of our machinery were sent to the yard for services, I just brushed my teeth and was about to go get water for bathing so that after bathing I will dress up and go to church when I received a call from our General Manger of the company telling me that I need to come out because there is a road maintenance work that we were asked to attend to immediately without delay. The unexpected emergency work took me by surprise because the previous day which was a Saturday was quiet with no work engagement and Sunday which was always a free day was now busting with activities.

I was really upset about the situation but I still had no choice but to change into my work clothes and head out to meet them so that we can go and commence the work. As I went out to meet them where the company's car was parked, I saw them loading some firewoods into the company's Hayab in other to transport it to the site where the maintenance will be taking place. I assisted in loading the firewoods and after that we also loaded a drum of bitumen into the vehicle also with a brush, shovels, keps block and a drum of water

Immediately after loading, we went to the site for the maintenance where we offloaded everything and then began working so that we won't have to spend the whole day there. Firstly we arranged the keps we brought in different angles so that we can mount the drum of bitumen on it to get heated up and cook, then the firewoods was arranged in-between the space provided with the drum of bitumen mounted on top of it and the fire was lit.

The bitumen was allowed to heat up for about 2 hours which allowed it to liquidity abit, then we decided to reduce the content into another half drum that we brought so that the content in the half drum will cook faster and we can begin pouring it in the affected areas. As the content was cooking on fire, one of our colleagues took the brush we brought and was cleaning the affected area of the road to rid it of sand or any other debris so that it won't affect our work.

After the cleaning and cooking was done, I decided to begin sprinkling water in the place that was brushed and my superior at work began pouring the cooked bitumen content in the affected area of the road carefully because if the hot content touches the skin, it will burn it and that day was very unfortunate for me because some droplets poured on my leg but thank God it wasn't too hot at that moment but it was very painful and I had to pour some diesel on the leg in other to quell the pain because that was the only solution for situations like that

We continued the cooking and pouring of the bitumen for 4-5 hours after which we began pouring granites on the road where we applied the bitumen. After everything we used small roller to roll the place for better compaction and after that we loaded everything back into the vehicle around 04:45 pm and went back home. I was really exhausted that day after I got back and decided to shower and get something to eat before going to bed early that day.
