Weekend Engagement - The Funeral Theory

A few close friends or many acquaintances? Which do you feel is better and why?

As an introvert, definitely a few close friends is better.

Though the question is.. What do extroverts think? Haha.

This reminded of something that I read about recently, called the Funeral Theory. The term "funeral" does sound a little depressing I know, but essentially, it's a concept which makes people reflect about the fact that a lot of us care so much about what people think of us, or to live a life pleasing others, but at the end of the day, how many of these people would actually turn up at our funeral (when the day comes)?

And my own take on this is, I get where the "inventor" of this theory is coming from. Basically, it's telling us to focus on people who matter to us, perhaps our family and loved ones, and a handful of close friends. After all, the many acquaintances that we meet in our lives will probably not turn up at the funeral.

But life is not as simple as a one size fit all theory right? In our decades of life in this world, we also have to build relationships with "people who don't really matter at the end of the day". One example would be colleagues at the workplace, well most of us probably never intended to make close friends with our colleagues but we do need to maintain a decent level of friendship sometimes to either have some company at work, or perhaps to complete projects. As much as we know the hard truth that we won't see one another once one of us leaves the company for another job, it doesn't mean we should not care about our colleagues.

Ultimately, I think age plays a huge part in this. Or at least that's what I think. At my current not so young age anymore, I feel like I want less drama and more peace in my life. After a long day or week at work, I don't have the appetite to deal the ups and downs of an emotional rollercoaster. Haha. At the same time, a life with zero drama can be too monotonous at times. So for me, having a few close friends definitely helps to strike a good balance.

So that's all I have! Do you agree or disagree with the Funeral Theory? Let me know in the comments below! As usual, weekends means a good time to get some nice treats for myself and today it's a nice routine matcha latte! Love the green-ness!

The funeral theory seems quite dramatic, but I understand the idea, although I wish funerals didn't exist. It's crazy how sometimes many of those who didn't share the deceased's life attach immense importance to attending the funeral, as if that made them better people.
