The Illusion Of Adulthood

It's so funny how as a child I couldn't wait to grow up and become an adult. I really didn't have a specific age in mind I wanted to grow into; all I knew was that I just wanted to become an adult, and that was because I thought adulthood was all about freedom. And this was because I always thought that being an adult would grant me the autonomy, independence, and ability to make my own decisions and rules.

As a kid, I saw adulthood through a lens of liberty. It seems like all the adults around me were living their lives to the fullest. It seemed like adulthood had full potential, and my little self couldn't wait to explore it. Lol, if only I knew what was ahead of me, I would have just stayed calm and prayed my childhood was elongated. I wanted to become an adult because I was tired of my parents making the decisions for me; I was tired of being forced to do things or go to places I didn't want to. I thought adulthood would be a breath of fresh air where I could easily spread my wings and fly.

If only I knew that adulthood would come with its own different set of challenges and responsibilities: endless deadlines, bills, obligations, anxiety, stress, and even depression. As an adult now I have come to realize that adulthood was not really what I exactly imagined.And if I am being honest, there were times when I wished I could go back to being a kid, when life was simpler and less stressful. To the days when I didn't have to bother about my bills being paid.
