The topics for this weekend-engagement write-up is pretty thought-provoking and I picked the one revolving around a longer weekend:
Three day weekend
Traditionally the weekend is Saturday and Sunday, but what if you could have a three day weekend every week? Would you work longer hours for a three day weekend and if so why? If you prefer the two day weekend format and shorter work days, explain why.
Clear to me, I will prefer to stick to the current 5-day working week 2-day weekend model. If you do the math, a 3-day weekend will mean each working day will be extended by 20% and this is totally undesirable for me.
Imagine knocking off 2 or 3 hours later each day. I will return home with lower energy and probably skip dinner with my family. Any interaction with my wife or kid is likely to be short. I will probably lose focus and be less patient due to the work fatigue. I don't believe a three-day quality weekend with the family can make it up to losing 4 days of interactions. 👨👩👧
Now, a human brain doesn't have much bandwidth to focus on matters over a long duration. With an extended working day, I will imagine significant productivity loss, lower quality of work delivered and increase in stress within the office! 😖
Further more, if you work within a team, there will be days when your colleagues need to go on leave. Inevitably, remaining team mates will have to cover the work in their absence. This means more work to cover over a longer working hours as compared to current situation. 😩
My post is probably over pessimistic, but what about you? Do you think there are advantages for such a concept, ie. 3-day weekend for longer hours on working day? Let me know in the comments below!
We have a standard 40 hour week in Australia with Saturday and Sunday off. Of course, people work longer and shorter and on Saturday and Sunday also. I reckon I'd do four ten hour days to have a three day weekend though. I tend to work about that long each day anyway so I think I'd be able to focus my day a little more to not have to work Friday.
I guess it comes down to what the job is though.
Thank you for your inputs!
Your last statement is very true, it depends on the nature of the job. I think it also matters on the lifestyle of each individual, and also the phase of life which they are in (Eg. Parents vs fresh grad vs near retirement).

In my former employer, I work from Monday to Saturday, Saturday is always easy peasy, if I am still working and if I were to choose between a 2-day or 3-day weekend I would prefer a 3-day weekend. My reason: since my job is as an IT professional in which I spend the majority of my day sitting in front of my office computer it would be favorable for me to work long hours since I am not physically active (but it is mentally daunting).
Yes, work stress does take a toll on mental health! Also don't forget to stand up and stretch once in a while, long hours of sitting can be bad for your spine, take care bro!
Take care also bro!
