After a relatively uneventful Friday night, it's safe to say Saturday absolutely kicked my butt. I had zero misconceptions that Saturday this was going to be a lazy weekend. I had a list of things that have been piling up for a while, and given the fact that we are going to be busy with other things every weekend through the rest of May, this was my one chance to get things done.
What I didn't expect, was that Saturday was going to be a pretty much non-stop marathon of manual labor that would leave me limping around like an arthritic old man for the rest of the weekend. It's a bit funny how things that used to be fairly easy get harder and harder the older I get.
I got started bright and early in the morning by heading to one of the local landscape suppliers to pick up two cubic yards of mulch. It had been a couple of years since we refreshed the mulch in our back beds, so I knew it was time to get that done. I was a bit concerned about my regular place being open since earlier in the week there was a brush fire that spread to some of their mulch piles. My fear was that they either wouldn't have what I need or they would be closed.
I was happy to find neither of those things were true. I paid my $75 inside the office and then pulled my truck around to wait for them to dump the mulch into the bed. People always talk about how it seems like everyone in the US has a truck, but honestly, there are two types of truck owners in the US. The first is people like me who actually use their truck as a truck, it gets muddy, and dirty, we fill it with stuff, we use it to haul stuff, we put it through the paces because it is a truck.
Then there are those who own a truck just to say they own a truck. Sure, they might pull a boat with it, but other than that, it sits around pristine and never gets put to the test. Usually you can pick these folks out because they have the absolute highest level trim package on their truck (like Denali), or it's all lifted on ridiculously stupid looking tires like they are some Big Foot wanna be.
There is no mistake my truck is a work truck. It already had some dents in it when I bought it used, and honestly, I was okay with that. It made it hurt a little less when I eventually put some dents and scratches on it of my own. I slowly drove the couple of miles or so home with my load of mulch and backed into the driveway to get ready to spread it.
As you can see, I first had to do a bit of weeding before I was ready to throw down the new mulch. The old mulch was getting pretty sad looking and was even losing its color in some spots. The funny thing is, in the bed that had the most weeds, we actually had landscape fabric down. The weeds had just chosen to grow on top of the fabric in the layer of mulch. That made them pretty easy to pull out. I think if they come back in the future (when they come back in the future) we will just spray them with vinegar or something.
With my tools at the ready, I started the process of moving the mulch. @mrsbozz was busy working in the trailer getting it ready for our upcoming camping trip, so I was basically on my own for the mulch. I just dumped it in piles in the bed so she could come through later and spread it out. I decided to head to the furthest beds first to get the majority of the walking out of the way.
I had the novel idea of keeping track of how many wheelbarrow loads of mulch I ended up moving, but I quickly gave up on that. It was a lot.
The nice thing about mulch is that it is relatively light compared to something like rocks or dirt. It didn't take too much to scoop it out of the back of the truck with a shovel, transfer it to the wheelbarrow, and then dump it out in the beds. I actually think it only took about an hour to get the whole thing unloaded. Maybe a little longer than that.
In case you are wondering, I have always thought to myself that black mulch can't really be environmentally friendly. I have no clue what kind of dyes or chemicals they add to the wood chips to get the black color, but I can't help but imagine it's somehow petroleum based. Maybe I am wrong. @mrsbozz likes the color, so I don't raise my concerns too loudly.
Before I knew it, the truck bed was empty and I was pretty happy with how quickly the process had went. I got up in the bed with my push broom can cleaned it out as best I could. @mrsbozz was pretty insistent that I take it down to the local car wash to spray out the bed of the truck, so I eventually relented.
In the US we have these local car washes all over the place where you can just pull your vehicle in, then you pay a crapload of coins to use the power sprayer and wash it yourself. In this case it was $3.00 (12 quarters) for 3 minutes and 30 seconds of spraying. You can pick different soaps and waxes to get mixed in with your sprayer, but I just used the rinse setting to get the mulch out of the back of the truck.
I also stopped at the gas station on the way home to get gas for my lawn mower.
After returning home with the truck, I spent the next hour or so mowing the lawn, then I came inside for a quick bite to eat. After lunch, I spent the rest of the afternoon into the evening doing some woodworking projects that I will write about in some later posts.
Finally, when the sun was just starting to get about halfway toward the horizon, I fired up the grill and threw some beef burgers, a chicken burger, some chicken breasts, and some mac and cheese on the grill. Throw in a couple of cocktails and an relaxing, but painful (my muscles were on fire) evening on the couch and it was a perfect way to end the day.
Wow Congrats ! You got it done finally. It is an achievement to finish that by yourself as an aged but still able man. Great! You deserve the grilled meat at the end of the day.
Thanks! I appreciate it!
My pleasure!
I know how hard it is to work in the garden, as I get older my body isn't what it used to be and doint this kind of labors is just too much for me, even though Im only 30 I think I feel older sometimes, the black mulch looks great in the flower beds, it gives contrast so I think it was worth the effort. Glad you took advantage of the weekend off before May rolls around there's nothing better than finishing a hard day's work with a barbecue and a few drinks to soothe sore muscles š» .
30! You still have a bit to go before you catch up with me. You should have all kinds of energy and stamina!
I was expecting that grill at the end of the post and my thoughts never lie š hope you guys washed it down real good with a bittle of beer
Actually, I drank zero beer this past weekend. It was all rum and whiskey!
Well at least it keeps you active during the weekend

That black mulch looks awesome! We can get it here, but it is super expensive. 75 for a tray load is great. We paid for about 6m3 (no idea what that is in feet and hands, and penises that you use in the US) around $780 (690ā¬) for what we got. If I got the same in a blackish colour, it would have been about double.
Oh wow, that is pretty crazy. I guess we are quite lucky. I think a meter is about the same distance as a yard maybe a couple inches longer, so it sounds like you got about 3x what I did. Pretty close anyway.
Yeah, it is about the same. Pretty bloody expensive here for this stuff. We can get it Abit cheaper if we have a trailer bad are willing to shovel ourselves by hand!

Seems like a tiring Saturday with all the physical or manual work, but it was a productive one. You must be pretty pleased with what you have accomplished for the lawn/landscape. Nice way to end a tiring day with some burgers while slowly recuperating from the body pain.
Yes, it was tiring, but very rewarding! I am finally starting to get full mobility back now!
It's the heavy duty chores that catch one eventually, sore muscles show a day well spent in any garden of late.
Busy weekends now the fairer weather arrived.

Yes indeed! You are right on all counts!
Weekends are too short!
We have been doing the same thing this weekend ;) I ordered 8 yards of extra fine red bark and have been weeding and spreading bark š
Yikes, that makes me feel a lot better about my small yard now!
Glad to see you actually use your truck. I always get a little embarrassed when students and friends go to America and come back and comment on all the pickups and I have to explain... yeah, they've become kind of ego pieces to many people and aren't actually used as trucks in way too many cases.
The car washes in America are another one everyone comments on. Not the self-serve washes you picture there, but the automatic ones that you put your car in neutral and get pulled through. We have nothing like that in Japan, so everyone who goes to America comments to me almost exactly the same thing: "It's like an amusement park ride!"
Haha yeah, we don't go to the automatic ones too much, but those have gotten pretty expensive as well. They just don't do a great job. For $20 I don't expect there to still be dirt and dust on my car! Once it gets a bit warmer my wife's car needs a good detail. I've always beat the crap out of my trucks. Probably part of the reason I would never buy a brand new one.
heavy chores remind us were not as young as we used to be
!pimp
Ain't that the truth!
Some days we feel younger some days not so much
I don't get why one will own a truck for aesthetic purpose or treat it as a princess š
It sure isn't the cheapest way to go...

Wow, it was a long day for you. Great job, @bozz!!! Now, it is @mrsbozz turn to fill the bed with plants, perhaps flowers?
Then you had to clean the truck, then you had to mow the lawn, and then on top of that, prepare dinner. That's what I call "industriousness", @bozz.
No wonder you had aches and pains,
Did you have to work today? !LOL

Yes, back to the grind all week! It's state standardized testing season! We actually made the planter because we want to create some privacy from the neighbors to one side of us. We are thinking about putting some tall fluffy fake trees in it.
Man you put in some work as far as Iām concerned. I would have been dead after the first couple wheel barrels.
Even though my truck is more of a hobby rebuild, Iām proud to say it still gets used to do truck stuff like that on occasion.
Good looking work @bozz
The mulch wasn't too bad. I think it was just standing on my feet most of the day that did me in. I am starting to realize just how weak my core is!
Nice job! Sorry about the sore body, I know the feeling. It looks like it's composted with a lot of vegetable matter and something in the mix brings in the black color. I'm sure they wouldn't waste money on dyes or petroleum products. They're trying to make as much money as possible!
You should only own a truck if you actually use it in my opinion. I've had one before when I used to haul stuff around a lot, but switched to an SUV when the stuff I was hauling didn't like to get wet!
I hope it you had some nice bourbon on Saturday evening to help with those aches and pains that come from a long day of hard work! lol
Ah, that is a good point about the mulch. It makes me feel a bit better about it too. No bourbon on Saturday night. That was Friday night. Saturday night is usually a Rum night!
You made mulch-hauling sound kinda fun. Respect!
Haha, it wasn't too bad. If I had stopped right there I probably still would have considered it a productive day and not felt as horrible as I did. I just had to keep going!

Great, now you reminded me that I have to screen (filter? sift? sieve?) the compost. Good thing that I actually like that work - whatever includes a shovel, count me in :-D
I'd say that the black mulch is either just some kind of mold, or that carbon is used. Would be the cheapest, cheaper than any other dyes I think.
Sounds like a busy, but satisfying weekend :-) Thank you for sharing!
Edit: Brave LLM says - "Black mulch dye is typically made from carbon black or iron oxide. Both materials are safe for people, plants, and animals in the landscape."
Thanks for the update on the mulch! That is good to know! I don't hate working in the yard, but there are other things I would much rather be doing!

.At least you use your truck as it was intended. I saw a Dodge Ram here the other day and it looked like it was just for posing. They are huge compared to most vehicles here and don't really fit our roads.
If we need stuff in bulk for the garden we just get it delivered. We've had a load of topsoil and pebbles for our landscaping. They come in big bags and we just had to shift them from the drive to where they were needed. I guess you just save on delivery costs. Our Honda CRV can take big loads, but we don't want to fill it with those things. Today we had 3 sacks of compost and a load of plants from the garden centre in there.
