Passive income with your art designs? Yes! Selling POD products on redbubble.com

Creating passive income streams first takes a bunch of work before they actually get passive. Putting in the initial time and work and a bit of maintenance can go a long way in helping you reach your goal of passive income.
Selling your own designs that can be placed on many products is easier than you think. You do not need anything else than your imagination to get started! No initial money investment, no stockpile of products. Just upload your original art or text and start earning.
Don't get spooked by having to do a little work to achieve good things.

Redbubble.com

This is not a full guide on how to sell your products, I am sure that there is plenty of them out there. This is a simple check of one of many sites that do print on demand sales.

Here we are talking about redbubble.com where I established a shop 2 years ago. You can reach the shop here: tinyhumandesign.redbubble.com The sales have not been crazy but I also did not spend a single second promoting our designs. Nevertheless the shop made a few sales without any extra promotion.

The reason for this is that people actually visit redbubble to buy cool merch of all kinds. The more designs you have in your shop the better chances you have of making sales.

Of course, you will need a lot of designs to make actual big money. And the better your ideas and designs are the more people will find them. The fact that thousands of people visit redbubble to purchase products on a daily basis gives quite decent chances to sell something.

If you are not a designer of images you can still sell a bunch of t-shirts and stickers and whatsoever.
One of the best-selling items in our shop is this button:

This has been designed on the redbubble product design page where you simply can upload your own designs or just write text and put that on the product.
Every time it sells I make a small profit of a few cents.

Assets provided by redbubble

If you would like to promote your products or your shop you can easily do that by downloading product photos provided by the website. In fact, the first image has been modified by me in Adobe express I really wanted that pumpkin on the image.

Upload upload upload!

The more designs you upload the higher your chance of making sales. Go with evergreen content. Halloween, Christmas, Easter, insert generic holiday here.

If you have designs that work in several seasons you will have more sales.

As halloween is coming up people will start looking for halloween themed items. The more halloween designs you have the better your chances of someone choosing your design to have it on a shirt a tote bag a baseball cap or something else.

work-153993279-baseball-cap.jpg

How the heck is this passive?

It is passive from the very moment you uploaded your design. Redbubble will handle sales and customer complaints, shipment and returns. The product only gets printed if someone actually buys it. So no huge storage and inventory you have to deal with.

You can upload a design every now and then, broadening your product palette. Each and every design will stay up on the site and will be visible in your shop at all times.

Speed up your sales

You can go and promote your products with a lot of providers directly from the site. Google Twitter Instagram and Pinterest are all options to boost your sales with ad campaigns.

If you want free tools use insta and pinterest to market your designs. Just link to your shop from your bio.

Or you can go ahead and spend money to make money. This however bears the risk of your ad campaign being more expensive than the profit you make on sales.

Also bear in mind that your profit margins will be quite low as the site is doing everything for you. Meaning you get a small royalty fee for each sale but it is not going to be top dollar.

The way you make money here is by big numbers. The more designs you have the higher your sales will be.

Can you show numbers?

Yes I can and as I said I have not been paying too much attention and most designs have been uploaded years ago.
These are the sales and transactions of payout to paypal.
This is the income of the past year. Completely passive since all designs are older than this date.

Of course, this is not life-changing money. I am sure you can make more if you are willing to promote your products more.
I will be working on that side of the business to have more and more people find the products in the coming months.

I will mainly work with blog posts and create Pinterest boards where I promote the various designs I already uploaded.

Too lazy for all of this?

Got to fiverr and get yourself a bro who designs 100 designs. Upload those to redbubble, pay for ads and lean back. IDK if this actually works but this gives you the no work done feeling if you need that.

Passive income is hard to achieve and mostly takes initial work so if you are too lazy for that maybe you are just too lazy for passive income?

Take action!

If you want to get started with your own redbubble shop and have questions do not be afraid to ask!
Registering requires KYC and you will have to do some digging but it works!

Are you already selling on Redbubble?
link your shop and get a few likes on your products!

Woah, had no idea about this until now! But sounds exciting and definitely a welcomed source of income for any designer. Might start my own shop soon! Will give it a proper read after my trip ends and see what's everything about. Thanks once again for letting us know about it!

It can definitely become a source of income even if it is just a small one.

Really nice designs!
I had done a few designs a few years ago, but earned a few dollars.
I was thinking of adding some more, but did not find the time to do so

The good thing is you can also design right on the spot. Open canva (if you have pro you can sell anything you create in there) takes 10 minutes to do a new design.
there is a buyer for each design that is for sure. Just takes a while.

I really like this post!! I’ve been trying to find something like this but most of these websites and services are not available in Latin America, at least not in Argentina.

I love how you started the post, because you really need to invest time and energy at the beginning, before the income became passive, and I’ll dare to say that you will also have to wait a bit to even perceive some income.

Nice post! Thanks for the data!

Thank you! Does redbubble work in Argentina? If not you could still print your own shirts and sell them on hive thrifted:
https://peakd.com/c/hive-167845/created
people are selling all sorts of things there ;)
You can also make your own HIVE based store on hivelist.store

Thank you for this information!! I have to learn a lot about it, I’m subscribing right now to that community!

I have to make a research about redbubble, but for example Amazon, Shopify and others that I don’t remember right now, are not available here for selling or for start something like affiliate program.

Thanks for letting us know about redouble
I don't create artworks but my friends do do I'd share with them

0.00176601 BEE

Yes share it around. The more the merrier. And even if you don'T create art: you can work with photography as well.

Redbubble looks like a nice investment option to consider. Another source of passive income it is

0.00176095 BEE

You have to invest a bit of tima that is for sure. But after that it becomes pretty passive. I wonder how it will do if I scale up operations.

0E-8 BEE

Or you put 100 HBD in savings and get 20/year. No upfront work 😀.

Seems to be a good business - for redbubble.
Maybe one can figure out what are the most popular items and sell them directly via another platform?

0.00136963 BEE

I agree with what @stayoutoftherz says.
This post actually makes me feel better about my decision not to use RedBubble. I was close to starting a shop, in an attempt to market my hypersensitivosaurus and cold turkey characters from my book(s), but decided otherwise. It didn't feel worth the time.
Companies like these might do a lot of work for you ( it seems ) but they also take all your possible profit away, thereby draining our valuable energy.

0.00119922 BEE

You are absolutely right, it might not be worth the time, but then again it takes about 20 minutes to bulkupload 10-20 designs. Also it could result in more sales of your books. Since you can add the title of the book into the description.
I feel you on the profit margins, but all you need to do is upload designs. In exchange they can be bought every day from that day on. So if you have a few designs that are really appealing to buyers you can make a decent income of it.
You can always use hivelist.store to create you own hive based shop and they also do print on demand stuff.

0.00000335 BEE

This is absolutely right, yet my wife and I doodle a lot and we have plenty of designs just laying around. Also I can use the income from there to buy HIVE or HBD.
This is just a tiny bit of extra, with almost no work.
Best option for passive income is HBD by far.

I wonder if the designs made with AI could be used?

0.00085725 BEE

That depends what models the AI uses. Most of the AI services do not give you any rights to monetize on content created with AI. You would have to see terms of service for each AI based tool you use.

This is a cool way to establish passive income. I haven't for once try selling any product via online. But base on this description, it's like I will give it a trial through this your redbubble platform. who knows if it will work for me.

Thanks for the encouragement

0E-8 BEE

I like passive income, it helps me pay off the small expenses so I dont have to worry about them. I did not know about redbubble but I might try it. Thank you for sharing this with us, much appreciated!

0E-8 BEE

Hopefully not too lazy as me frog think about passive income to come into the token itself possibly with the help of sum of those "bros". Thank you for sharing.

I tried making some merch on Redbubble to promote with my book/music but the production cost was already high and now they added fees. I guess if you wanna try your luck/skill with mass marketing of some catchy designs, it could be lucrative, but not many people wanna spend $40 on socks so you’ll need to sell a lot at a low margin!
