El Salvador has stopped buying bitcoin daily

Arkham Intelligence data shows that the last purchase was made on February 17, 2025.

This comes after the country agreed to a $1.4 billion loan with the International Monetary Fund, which requires changes to its bitcoin policies.

El Salvador currently holds more than 6,000 bitcoins, worth an estimated $586 million.

President Nayib Bukele had begun a policy of buying one bitcoin per day since November 2022.

In March 2024, Bukele transferred 5,600 bitcoins (then worth more than $400 million) to a cold wallet, announcing El Salvador’s first bitcoin vault.

The move came after it had previously only announced purchases via social media.

Under the loan agreement, El Salvador agreed to scale back its bitcoin initiatives, including making bitcoin acceptance voluntary for the private sector rather than mandatory.

In January 2025, the legislature passed amendments to the Bitcoin Act to align with these requirements.
