My brother made a joke today about how my taste has evolved over time and that I'm now 'bougie.' It's funny since I'm now willing to pay on items that I previously considered pricey. I don't believe I became more polished; rather, I simply learned to live within my resources.
I couldn't spend the way I do now a year ago because I couldn't afford it. Back then, when my brother made purchases, I would yell because I believed he was being excessive. The issue is, I always viewed his spending through the lens of my own purchasing power, which was often too much for me to manage.
Now, when he makes certain purchases, it irritates me since my own income won't allow me to spend that much, but I realize he can afford it. That's exactly what's occurred to me; my budget has grown in tandem with my income.
One aspect of my expenditures that has remained consistent is that I do not overspend. I only spend what I can afford and make sure that every purchase I make is worthwhile. I make care to enjoy whatever income I earn while staying to a budget.
I didn't have any long-term savings when I was in school since I was living off my mother's allowance, and it didn't make sense to me to build appropriate saves from a 15k Naira monthly allowance, so I just saved for a specific purpose. I bought and cooked as much food as I could afford and spent the rest on wears and slides.
My colleagues used to joke me about how much money I had, but I was simply very good at budgeting.
It was the same three years ago once I worked; I saved a percentage of my salary but never denied myself what I could afford, and it was simple to treat myself after a well-planned budget. Someone called me stingy the same year because I wasn't spending the money they thought I had and was sticking to my tight budget.
I don't spend much these days, except for the ingredients I used for my food recipe, and I keep to my budget. Thanks to hive, I can finally save for the future while still being 'bougie' on my meager paycheck.
