Our electricity meter was replaced earlier this year. Until then, we had an old one where we could watch the dial spin to see how much electricity was being used. Not exactly how much, but whether it was a lot or a little. The faster it spun, the more it was.

What really annoys me is that it isn’t a new one with a built-in smart meter—one that already sends all the data to the utility and provides me with accurate readings.

Through a survey, I was able to get a smart meter at a good price—one that reads the data via infrared. It “just” needs to be attached to the electricity meter.

Now I can see exactly how much electricity I’m using at any given moment. And, of course, that lets me estimate roughly which appliances are using how much power.

It really annoys me that they install a “new” electricity meter that isn’t actually new—one that doesn’t have this feature built in. But it’s no wonder that the energy transition just isn’t making headway in Germany.

On average, my fridge and freezer probably use a significant portion of the energy, while the stove, washing machine, and dishwasher do use a lot at times, but they don’t run every day or around the clock. My PC doesn’t run all day anymore either—at least not at night. It does run during the day, though, when I’m producing enough electricity anyway.

Anfang dieses Jahres wurde unser Stromzähler getauscht, bis dahin hatten wir noch einen alten, bei dem wir beim Drehen zusehen konnten, wie viel Strom verbraucht wird. Also nicht genau wie viel, sondern ob viel oder wenig. Je schneller er gedreht hatte, desto mehr war es.

Was mich echt ärgert, ist, dass es kein neuer mit integriertem Smartmeter ist, also der bereits alle Daten ans Werk schickt und mir so genaue Daten liefert.

Durch eine Umfrage konnte ich günstig an einen Smartmeter kommen, einen der per Infrarot die Daten ausliest. Dieser muss "nur" aufgesetzt werden auf den Stromzähler.

Jetzt kann ich jederzeit genau sehen wie viel Strom ich gerade verbrauche. Und damit natürlich auch ungefähr abschätzen, was wie viel Strom ungefähr verbraucht.

Mich ärgert es echt, wieso man einen neuen Stromzähler eingebaut bekommt, ohne dass es wirklich ein neuer ist, einer bei dem das Integriert ist. Aber kein Wunder, dass es in D dann einfach nicht vorangeht mit der Energiewende.

Im Schnitt verbrauchen meine Kühl- und Tiefkühlschrank wohl damit einen ordentlichen Teil der Energie, wobei Herd, Waschmaschine und Geschirrspüler zwar zeitweise viel verbrauchen, aber dafür ja nicht täglich und nicht rund um die Uhr laufen. Mein PC läuft nun auch nicht mehr den ganzen Tag, also nicht mehr in der Nacht. Tagsüber schon, wenn ich eh genug Strom produziere.
