Overcoming The Fear Of Failure

When I was a child I taught myself how to ride a bicycle without training wheels. I fell of many times and scrapped my legs and knees often. Yet the only memory I have was the moment I balanced myself on the bicycle and how I rode around my garage in circles.

Everyone has to face challenges in order to accomplish their goals. As a child I wanted to learn how to bike, swim, and snowboard. Each one of these activities I would be horrible at performing but got better with practice.

However the practice did not come easy. This was because my introverted personality made me feel uncomfortable falling down in front of people. I just felt I did not want people watching me fail time and time again. Each time I practice it would wound up being
before sun rise or after sun set. These times were the lease amount of people watching and my time to practice.

As I got older I never changed my introverted personality. Instead I continued it with strong convection. In college I would go outside only to get to class and commute back home. Any extra time I had I would either be in my room studying or in the school library at a spot I am all alone. In those times I would be studying class material over and over again until it became second nature. At the time the goal was not to fail and lose my scholarship.

Isolation Myself From The World

Whether I was a child or an adult I had fears holding me back from reaching my goals. The only way I sought to achieve my goals turned out to be continuous effort and focus.

The times I am afraid of learning new things is often because I do not feel comfortable failing in public. My way to cope with this is by staying in my room to train and prepare myself for the times I do have to perform. For instance study a lot before an exam and afterwards in preparation for the finals at end of semesters. I would be on this routine for weeks straight and years on.

When it came to athletic activities I would be in my room alone lifting weights and doing aerobics. All the effort put in so that I would have better hands and eyes coordination and a good physical foundation to learn or play sports.

I put in many hours in my room not only for sleep but to better myself as a person mentally and physically. The way I overcame my fear of failure was simply putting in the time to practice. I did not like to fail in public nor did I like to fail at all.

Like the old saying goes, "Practice makes perfect." If at times I do not want people to see me fail I would train privately.

There is an old rule of thumb that 10,000 hours of practice in a specific topic or skill will make one a master of it. Whether true or not it is clear to me that with more effort and time put in to reaching my goals the more likelihood I will achieve positive outcomes.

The next time you feel like you do not want to try something just realize you may need more practice or study before you want to perform the task. Do what you can alone or with closest friends to perform better. Over time the fear of failure tends to fade as you see yourself do better at the task when training and studying.

I found this motivating, most people are not comfortable failing before others and it's understandable. You still had to devise other means to practice and succeed which is commendable. We have no reason to fail.

Thanks for the kind words. I don’t like feeling sorry for myself for not knowing or thinking it’s all right not to try. !PIZZA !LUV

At least your way to avoid failure is to train alone mentally and physically to get better at any skills you need to perform and master.

There are just too many people who don't put in the effort. We will obviously make mistakes as we go through life and the best we can do is learn from them.
