Look at the chart! Agriculture accounts for only 14% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Electricity and heat production, Industries, and transportation are the biggest gas emission contributors. When the policy makers ask to reduce 50 % Nitrogen emission from the livestock farming, the farmers think that they are targeted. Reducing 50% Nitrogen emission means to cut 30 % of production.
On the other hand, the war between Russia and Ukraine will cause food shortages in the coming months in Europe. If the Dutch farmers cut production by 30%, the food shortage will be more extreme. Additionally, the policy of reducing the gas emissions from farming is not only in the Netherlands but also in some other European countries like Germany, Poland, and other countries.
