Tasmanian police find top 15 crypto ATM users are scam victims

Tasmanian police have revealed that the top 15 users of cryptocurrency ATMs in the state were all victims of scams, collectively losing about 2.5 million Australian dollars, with approximately 900,000 AUD deposited directly into these ATMs.

These victims, mostly around 65 years old, were targeted through various fraudulent schemes such as fake investment opportunities etc. and then moved to encrypted messaging apps to avoid detection.

The number of cryptocurrency ATMs in Tasmania has increased sharply from just one in 2021 to over 20 in 2025, providing scammers with an accessible and anonymous method to receive illicit funds. Scammers typically pressured victims to deposit cash into these ATMs after banks flagged suspicious transactions and blocked transfers, exploiting the victims' trust and urgency to comply.

Tasmania Police Cyber Investigations and national agencies like AUSTRAC and the Australian Federal Police are intensifying efforts to crack down on these scams, emphasizing public education and caution against high-pressure requests to use crypto ATMs from unknown individuals. Victims face severe financial consequences, including dependence on pensions, forced asset sales, or delayed retirement.

Authorities advise anyone who has been scammed to immediately cut contact with scammers, notify their bank or digital currency provider, stop further payments, and report the incident to police and Scamwatch.
