Indonesia targets foreign investment with new AI roadmap, official says

Indonesia is on track to finish work on its first national AI strategy by next month, aiming to attract significant foreign investment and position itself in the global artificial intelligence and semiconductor industries.

As Southeast Asia's largest economy, Indonesia sees this AI roadmap as a crucial step in joining the international race for innovation and chip production, mirroring regional competitors like Malaysia that have already secured major commitments from tech giants.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital, Nezar Patria, stated that the upcoming roadmap will be an extensive framework—surpassing the limited ethics guideline released in 2023—and is designed to help AI developers and investors navigate Indonesia’s market.

The strategy will highlight avenues for integrating AI in sectors such as healthcare and agriculture while outlining the development of infrastructure and computational clusters. “This will provide investors with insight into the potential for AI applications in Indonesia,” Patria said, expressing hope that the roadmap will facilitate new investments.

Recent years have seen Indonesia attract high-profile investments. The government also links these digital efforts to its drive to become a player in the global semiconductor supply chain by promoting its critical minerals and proposing joint projects with foreign partners, including the United States.

The country lags in AI infrastructure and expertise, requiring increased talent development and supportive regulation to fully capitalize on AI-related growth.

The roadmap is part of a broader government push—reflected in “Making Indonesia 4.0” and the long-term Digital Vision 2045—to streamline bureaucracy, support startups, and build an ecosystem where global and local innovation can thrive. As the plan takes shape, Indonesia is openly welcoming global tech firms and investors to help shape the future of AI in the archipelago.
