France charges 25 over crypto kidnapping spree in Paris

French authorities have charged 25 individuals, including six minors aged between 16 and 23, in connection with a series of kidnappings and attempted abductions targeting prominent figures in the cryptocurrency sector in Paris and nearby regions.

The investigation centers on a failed May 13, 2025, kidnapping attempt in Paris’ 11th arrondissement, where the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, CEO of the French crypto exchange Paymium, were targeted in broad daylight. The victims suffered minor injuries after being attacked by masked assailants, and the attempt was foiled with the help of a bystander who intervened.

This was not an isolated incident; a similar failed plot targeting the same family occurred the day before, and another attempted abduction was disrupted near Nantes days later.

Of the 25 suspects, 18 are in pre-trial detention, three have requested deferred hearings, and four remain under judicial supervision. The suspects come from diverse backgrounds, including regions in France, Senegal, Angola, and Russia, and are believed to be motivated primarily by financial gain.

Despite the arrests, the masterminds behind the kidnapping ring remain unidentified, raising concerns about ongoing threats to crypto industry figures.

These events have prompted the French government and crypto industry leaders to enhance security measures, including home security checks and increased police collaboration with crypto firms.

Additionally, insurance companies and private security firms have started offering kidnap and ransom policies and personal protection services to crypto holders due to the rising physical risks associated with digital asset ownership.

The wave of kidnappings has become a significant embarrassment for French authorities and highlights the vulnerabilities faced by wealthy individuals in the cryptocurrency space. Authorities continue to investigate and monitor the situation to prevent further incidents.
