Competition heats up as crypto exchanges Contest for European market

Competition among crypto exchanges in Europe is intensifying as more firms establish operations on the continent, driven largely by the regulatory clarity brought by the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. Major exchanges such as OKX, Coinbase, Bybit, and Crypto.com have secured MiCA licenses this year, signaling a shift toward a more regulated and unified European crypto market.

MiCA imposes strict but clear rules, creating a level playing field for all crypto exchanges operating within the European Economic Area (EEA). This regulatory certainty is attracting global exchanges to Europe, as MiCA simplifies market access by replacing the previous fragmented licensing system that required separate approvals in each EU member state. The framework is seen as more advanced compared to the still-developing regulatory environment in the United States, which is yet to finalize comprehensive stablecoin regulations.

However, MiCA's licensing and compliance costs have increased significantly—up to six times higher than before—leading to consolidation in the market. Many smaller startups have been forced to relocate or shut down due to these burdens, while large exchanges benefit from the ability to operate across the entire EU under a single license. As of early 2025, only a handful of entities have been licensed under MiCA, but this number is expected to grow substantially by year-end.

The competitive landscape is also influenced by differing national environments within Europe. Countries like Poland and Lithuania have been crypto-friendly hubs with many registered Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs), whereas stricter regulatory countries like Germany and France have fewer licensed entities.

Despite challenges such as high compliance costs, Europe’s regulatory clarity is expected to help it pull ahead globally in crypto adoption and innovation, especially as discussions about a follow-up regulatory package, “MiCA 2.0,” are underway to address remaining gaps.
