The Value Of $5 In A Higher Or Smaller Proportion

png_20220911_035810_0000.png

I was on a bus some days ago with a friend and we saw some good turkey, with $5 we could grab some of them, then order an orange while eating some swallows with vegetable soup.
However, this guy and I were quick to admit that while we can comfortably afford $5, there's no way we'd actually use the money to buy a turkey.

This is because, we both had problems, needs, and even responsibilities, problems it could solve that wasn't even his or my primary problem.
He said he could send it to his mum as you buy groceries or he could use it to buy some raw materials for his printing gigs which could potentially earn him some profits.

The Importance Of $5 To The Bigger Picture

Then I remembered my brother was supposed to have surgery, even if $5 wouldn't pay for the surgery, it could potentially turn from $995 to $1000, because the doctor wasn't going to accept $995, no matter how close it is to $1000, this signals that $5 isn't totally useless and since it seemed inadequate, it could play its small part in solving the bigger problem at hand.
This was why I couldn't use the money to buy a turkey. In the grand scheme of things, we have to look at the things $5 could potentially achieve and it really wouldn't be groundbreaking.

Everyone in life deserves to take care of their wants to a sizeable extent

.....because taking care of things like "wants" might seem unnecessary, but then, it keeps us tethered, happy to be living life even if we might be poor, owning students debts, having expired rents or failing a job interview. I do not smoke nor do I take alcohol, but I can imagine a person spending the equivalent of $5 on alcohol just to forget the $500 problem they're currently having. In reality, we like to forget the problems we're currently facing, so we buy into cheaper indulgences to keep our minds off seeing the bigger picture. While this doesn't feel logical.

Because we're "sentimental beings," it's difficult for us to hold on to logicality to scale through the biggest hurdles of life.

Being poor is a prevalent issue in life, it's even more saddening especially when they cannot afford the dream life they want. But they're tapped into some other sorts of motivation to keep them going in life.
At the moment, I need a generator as well to power my apartment due to issues with electricity which have kept me unavailable. So in reality, I need about $435 to be able to buy one.
But I cannot afford this. However, you must understand that $5 is the case study here because that is the amount of money I could have used to buy a turkey. If I minus $5 from $435, I'll have about $430 left.

Seeing "No Need" When There's Actually A Need

While the $5 I subtracted is insignificant in solving that problem, it's going to be psychologically difficult for me to spend that $5 on turkey because I know... I'm conscious of the $435 problem I have. Recently, I've spent entirely everything I have on family issues.
This has put me in an uncomfortable situation. There are times I realize "oh I need a new jacket" but I'll never even try to buy it.
Rather I'll keep thinking I could manage the old one, it'll be difficult for me to accept the fact that I need a new one simply because I could channel that money into taking care of the need of another person. Most people are programmed to be providers because of the circumstances of things like family.

We cannot equally measure the worth of people except we also begin to measure the financial sacrifices they've made which makes them unable to meet up to requirements or standards. Life's unfair. When people are being judged or measured financially it's difficult to consider the essence or sacrifices they've made because their efforts or attempts are never counted In life.
For someone who's been wrongly accused of being selfish, it's quite difficult to talk about the things you've had to sacrifice because we don't go about with banners on our heads to talk about why we're financially inadequate.

This is because people make money in the open but spend it secretly on things that will be difficult for others to even fathom, withstand or envisage.

Being Made Inadequate By One's Financial Environment

I have a friend who could have become a millionaire by now, he has the skills, the ability, and the intuition to become wealthy but he's still feeding on crumbs, why? He can't build or nurture the business he's good at, because it's hard for him to raise capital for the business, because his immediate family's needs keep intruding anytime he decides to raise money.

In life we're often made inadequate by our financial environment no matter how hard we struggle, sometimes, it'll be difficult for us to spend to momentarily keep ourselves happy because we find it difficult to indulge our need to be happy when we have problems that should keep us worried and sad.

However, this is mostly possible for people who have chosen to be conscious and responsible for a fault. However, we might not be able to change this, but one thing I've discovered is that life is fickle, and we cannot be accountable to ourselves if we're dead.

Hmmm.. Some deep post right here.

Well let's start with the using a 5$ bill t forget the sorrows of a 500$ problem.

I see this a lot and most people behave as if the problem goes when the problem still remains.

So I think it makes no sense in using something to temporarily forget a problem when it can reduce the problem.

According to the richest man in Babylon, he says no matter what you do save 10% of your income and pay debts with another 10%.

In this case scenario, 5$ is not 10%, it is however 1%. Which goes a long way.

Now if we look at it in bigger terms...vsay you had a million dollar problem, would you rather spend 10k$ to forget it or put it to reduce the problem?

Then the environment and how successful one can be is a very valid thing.

Even if you are a provider, you should know when to stop or else you will be providing at the expense of your moving forward.

I think, a lot of people aren't even looking at how big their problem is, they're more concerned about they can escape, drift away into nothingness where they can pretend that their problems doesn't exist. In reality, we tend to underestimate how much we want to forget about our problems especially when we don't have the means to solve them. It's why we have people taking to alcohol, sex and even gambling. These indulgences are cheaper because we think there's always a "tomorrow" even if we cannot solve our problems today.

Even if you are a provider, you should know when to stop or else you will be providing at the expense of your moving forward.

Being an Igbo, you cannot escape that burden of being a provider, because you naturally slot into it without given the permission to choose if you want it or not.

Well, I dont know how it is for Ibo people and how it is for someone with a big family but I can definitely say that people should act their wage.

If you make a million naira, you are not allowed to give 59% whether you are Ibo or not.

Same way if you earn a hundred thousand naira. I feel these are the principles tho

I have witnessed cases where passengers were asked to get off a taxi by a taxi driver because the passenger was short 50 cents.
More like paying R19.50 instead of R20.

It had me thinking though when I experience such but on the other hand, this money when short to pay for something very important like a hospital bill can be stressful.

Exactly, sometimes we tend to underestimate how far or how much how these fickle amount of money can do, we only begin to realize this when we're short or can't get it to complete or take care of a shopping. Just like you mentioned regarding the taxi man, it's just how we place the rules.

You know right

Small things can become enormously big in the long run. Also, as you have said, $5 can be the difference between owning something essential or not having it.

Thank you for sharing another valuable insight related to finance.

You're right, I think in the actual sense, we might not even understand the value that $5 carries. Imagine accumalating $5 in the long run, could make a whole lot of difference, this is why we don't even know we're saving especially if they're amounts we wouldn't even take notice of.

We mostly forget how powerful a cent can be talkless of 5 dollars, 10naira sometimes can make our life look like a mess because we don't have it.

Hahaha this is totally true, I think 10 naira as a denomination is literally useless, but we often underestimate how it's useful especially in embarrassed situations.

You just fulfilled the saying, " Look before you leap" and also worked with your scale of preference and I admire you for that.

You had the money 💵 to buy it( the turkey 🦃) which you would have devoured with great delight but knowing that you and your friend had other pressing needs, you denied yourselves that comfort.

Not all people have talent so anyone that happens to be gifted should try as much as possible to practice and improve it as it will benefit them and their close ones ( though one's financial environment matters a lot, just like you said 😊)

Great job here @josediccus 👍👍👍.

Thank you, well, I might not continue to deprive myself of so much because it's beginning to feel sinful. Nevertheless I understand the need to be responsible and I definitely was. In life one of the greatest things for me is staying afloat and adrift, never doing it too much and maintaining a balance.
Hahaha thank you, I do miss that turkey everyday, I'm hoping I can have enough money one day to go for it, but as for now, I'm choosing discipline and sacrifice.

It's a valid point and one that I generally don't pay attention to as much because I have an emergency fund and I don't really touch it much. There were a few times when I wanted to buy something but was off by a little bit of cash so it's not like I can't relate though but that was back when I paid more in physical fiat.

Yeah, when you have enough cash these things hardly happens. It often happens when people are paying more cashlessly than with cash. I guess can also happen when people do not have Money.

Problems of life would never finish. The poor in our midst would never end.
Mentality change becomes an essential meal to feed on in other to grow from poverty to wealth. Wealth is an attitude. $5 is nothing to a man who is poor in the mind but to the who says beyond his belly $5 is $500 in a short space of time. A grain of corn 🌽 can not satisfy the stomach but when planted, the harvest won't be a single grain same with $5 which could only buy turkey 🦃 and in less than an hour the taste is vanished.

It is only a question of your priorities in life. Control of money spending that you need to put in your mind or maybe put it on paper.
