Hello Hive Fam!
Hope you are doing well and having a great time wherever you are in the world.
The H-1B visa fee is the hot news this time. We can see numerous updates and discussions about the change that US President Donald Trump has announced. Basically, the change has been announced on the fee structure, whereas the new fee is going to be 100K US dollars, and earlier it was around 2 to 5000 US dollars, so there is a big increase in the fee. I have gone through the news and tried to understand what has happened because everyone is talking about it, so I wanted to understand the exact situation. So I spent some time on the news articles and figured out what change is going to happen.
Now, as per the new rule, which is already effective from 21st September onwards, the new fee for the H-1B visa is going to be 100K US dollars, and this will be applicable only for the new applications. And there will be no change for the people who are already the existing visa holders. It is also not applicable in the case of renewables. So primarily, it is going to affect the new people who are trying to work on this visa in the United States, and probably this change will reduce the number of applications.
The high-value jobs will be supported because the employer might be willing to pay for this fee, which is surely high but considering the skill requirement they should be OK but for the entry level or the mid level jobs it is expected that the employers will not be OK and for the candidate also this amount might not be OK since it is really a big amount. We can't say if there can be some exceptions to this rule because you never know when Mr Trump comes forward with some sort of exceptions in the policy. So until that does not happen, it remains the same that every new application has to pay 100K US dollars towards the visa.
A lot of people work on this visa because it is a common visa for the US. But I believe this impact takes some time to get reflected in the country's economy because it is not just that everything is going to be good for the US, but also that things can be difficult for many technology companies operating in the US. If they do not get the required skill set within the United States, they will have to either get ready to pay that high fee to get the skill set from outside or hire someone locally in the US who might not be the best fit according to the skills requirement.

Let's see how much time it takes to see the impact in the job market in the US, and those who are not willing to work in the US, this news is not for them, since they will not be impacted anyway. But now, because this discussion has started, you never know if in the future Mr. Presidents will also bring some change in the existing visa policy, and if that happens, then it is going to affect the job market even more. Thank you!

I don't think you will see much of an impact on US job market. Like you said this fee is just for new applications and it was already more cumbersome for US corporations to jump through H1B hoops and bring someone to US when we can simply hire you remotely from India or Ukraine or any other place on a contract. Then there is offshoring everything to India, etc. which works too. The bigger threat to IT jobs is AI than anything mentioned by me above. And H1B is primarily used for IT workers, but of course nothing is being done about it, because it is simply political posturing from the current administration in US.
I did see a few posts on LinkedIn where US based truck drivers were celebrating this and complaining how these H1B visa people are taking away his jobs. He has no understanding what H1B is about, but he is very happy with our commander in chief right now and that is what this is all about. Half of the country is like that...
That is true and I think in the near future most of the countries will try to be dependent upon their own technological equipments and tech related things. I think like how China is doing. The geopolitical is shifting very fast these days and this is going to change the whole geopolitics.
We all will see the changes in a few upcoming years. The few upcoming years are going to be very crucial for everyone all over the world. Let's hope for the best have a great day.
Very well pointed out @bhattg mate that next few years are going to be game changer as a lot of things are changing fast. let's see how it goes
Absolutely. This will impact only fresh applications for now, but you never know if one day Mr trump wakes up and adds another restriction to this rule.
Working remotely is always possible and because of that we can not expect any bigger impact.
Its interesting to know about truck drives and this can be a good news for them Indeed but overall there is a lot of uncertainty in market because of tariff war and now this is another but surely its not so big news to be worried about. have a great day @seattlea
