Hive Witnesses and Power Down Patterns

In the vibrant and dynamic ecosystem of Hive, witnesses fulfill a crucial but often thankless role. They operate the blockchain by validating transactions, proposing updates, and enhancing its security and stability. The top 20 witnesses, in particular, hold a significant role in governing and shaping the direction of Hive. In this analysis, we'll delve into the actions of the top 50 witnesses, specifically focusing on their power-up and power-down activities with HIVE.

So who do you vote for and why? Please comment below, I want to learn more about the Top 50, then the Top 100 eventually and what they are up to!

Witness Table

Here is a table showing the top 50 witnesses, their earnings in Hive Power (HP) and USD, their share percentage, the number of blocks they've processed, and their HP per block.

I agree. Anytime a top 20witness is doing power downs they should let us know.
I recently just changed up all my witness voting on a bunch of my accounts

I believe it's much needed to keep witnessess accountable, however I'd love to see these names together with some numbers. While powering down some part of earning to pay the bills is ok, I'd love too see if there are witnessess who just power-down it all. Another opinion I hold is people who hold significant ammount of HP are just more credible here.

agree

Hmm
I even wonder why so many people power down. Anyway, it may be a normal thing but maybe they should tell people that they want to power down before they do so but is that really necessary?

nope, I am just looking for reasons to aupport those powering down & want to ask before changing my votes up again.

While I've never powered down a single HIVE earned as a witness, I don’t believe there's a necessity for witnesses (or anyone, for that matter) to justify their decisions to power down or explain how those funds are utilized. Witness rewards come in the form of HP; without the option to power down, witnesses would essentially be working for free. The reliability and security of Hive depend on its witnesses, and the rewards they receive are quite modest compared to content rewards. It isn't the responsibility of a witness to financially support projects out of their own pockets.

True while $2,900 daily to witnesses is very modest compared to the entire reward pool... the top 20 earn over $100 daily each and more than half are powering down. I am merely looking for reasons to support them for powering down. If top 20 there are reasons they are there and I want to know more, this is a decentralized world & we could just follow the money with a negative post of results calling them out yet this way is much nicer and looking to support those powering down for reinvesting into Hive is not bad is it? If one says they power down for their income I would look at their project, one draining millions from people via NFT sales would not be excused in my book yet one that builds for all of Hive and sells nothing like coins or NFTs powering down to survive... I would add a vote for this person

Some have millions of HP Delegations and power down still, not sure what this is used for nor will I get an answer from the big one as the founder upvoted your comment... not going to share the info with the community

You're welcome to use whatever metrics you prefer, but in my opinion, it doesn't make much sense. When you hire someone, you expect them to do their job and compensate them accordingly. How they use their earnings is their decision. By asking people what they're using their own money for, you're stepping beyond the bounds.

Witnesses should ensure the reliability and security of the Hive network. That should be the main expectation.

I agree with @deepresearch, that people who hold significant amount of HP tend to be more credible.

Nonetheless, it's positive to see you engaging with the voting and doing research on whom to vote for, even if I disagree on the method you use.

You are one of the witnesses I chose, and after reading your answers I am even more convinced that I made the right choice.
