They say it with such confidence it’s almost enviable. But the truth is, it doesn’t matter whether it’s an automated vault, a DEX with a good reputation, or the biggest exchange of the moment. The risk isn’t in the fancy name or the clean interface. We’ve already seen contracts that seemed otherworldly in their security get drained, institutional wallets siphoned as if they were pocket change, exchanges that seemed untouchable freeze funds by decree or fall victim to their own Achilles’ heel. Nothing—there’s no sanctuary. It doesn’t matter if you consider yourself an expert or if you’re just taking your first steps; when the floor gives way, it gives way for everyone.

I’m not writing this to sow fear or invite cynicism, but because I think it’s time to drop the rhetorical guard. Talking about “security” in capital letters as if it were an immutable attribute of any given protocol is deceiving others and deceiving ourselves. What seems constant is uncertainty. No promise of stability is absolute. Custody, decentralization, and control are beautiful concepts, but in practice they coexist with human, technical, and systemic vulnerabilities. We have to accept that “unbreakable protocols” can break.

We’ll need to design with more layers of caution and less blind faith in pretty interfaces. If anything hurts more than losing, it’s feeling that no one prepared us for the fact that loss was a real possibility from the start.
