STRAW: my opinion

Most of us are on the brink of the abyss. A chain of events can take us from a position of tranquility to absolute despair. Anyone who refuses to accept that reality is deceiving themselves.

This is one of the pillars that sustains the plot of the film STRAW. A work that shows the realities of a society that tends to minimize what it doesn't experience firsthand.

If we look deeply into the causes of each domino piece that led to the final fall, we can find two key elements: lack of empathy and abuse of power.

The school principal, the landlady, the boss, the police officer, all eager to wield power and reluctant to listen.

While the case of the police officer who believes himself above the law simply because he is a police officer is worrying, as unfortunately there are many such officers around the world, the boss's case is the worst for Janiyah's particular situation. And he's the worst because he acts out of pure meanness by refusing to give to Janiyah her earned paycheck. Such a simple act ends in the destruction of a life. In my opinion, his ending was appropriate; in his last scene, he was too stupid, and that almost always comes at a price.

Empathy, or simply the fact that others had behaved like decent people, would have allowed him to overcome the burden he was facing and make thoughtful decisions. And this is where the film teaches us another lesson: vulnerable people are generally desperate, and in that state, it's very difficult to think logically.

Another aspect that stands out without even being directly mentioned is healthcare in the United States. Where bills can bankrupt anyone, even those with health insurance.

This film may make you uneasy throughout its entire runtime, and that's okay. That's its goal: to let you know that you could be the one who falls into that downward spiral.

If at any point you think it's highly unlikely that these things happen, I remind you that, in matters of life, reality always surpasses fiction.
