Feeling seduced by the treats (ENG-ESP)

He went for gold and found it. Jerry Seinfeld made his directorial debut in Unfrosted (2024), also taking on the lead role based on a script he wrote with his team.
Pop-Tarts (unfrosted), aimed at children's breakfasts, are the result of intense competition between the powerful cereal companies Kellogg's and Post during 1963. These economic empires intertwined with others: milk and sugar.

Edsel Kellogg III and Marjorie Post vied to win over the children's market and, according to Seinfeld, spared no expense or trickery in the effort: from buying up the entire sugar production of a Latin American magnate (him), to negotiating with Nikita Khrushchev (her) for access to Cuban sugar mills.

The ambitious comedy includes all kinds of scenes common to spy films, Cold War thrillers, gangster movies, political campaigns, and social uprisings; but more than anything, it skillfully parodies them and completes itself by incorporating humorous situations, caricatured characters, and well-crafted, funny dialogue. This contrast achieves the precise balance needed to develop a particular irony sustained for 90 minutes.

Truly, "a genuine madness" with a star-studded cast: Seinfeld himself, Hugh Grant, Melissa McCarthy, Christian Slater, among other adults (since the involvement of the three children delivering their lines and gestures is as enjoyable as that of the seasoned professionals).

It's obvious that a flagship product of the Kellogg company (Pop-Tarts) is put front and center, but it also highlights—especially through very suggestive images and deliciously anticlimactic dialogue—the state of prosperity of an era that many remember as a golden age of pop culture.

The presence of inventive geniuses, Andy Warhol, the expectation of the moon landing, classic cars, and the persistence of the middle-class American dream, with its lawn-surrounded home and the milkman delivering door-to-door, touches the nostalgic and familiar side of a moment that has been recreated in other recent films like Fly Me to the Moon and Barbie.

The return to the emotional memory of a simpler, calmer life is fully realized scenically through the clothes and hairstyles, some of the rhythms that marked musical history, as well as the visual hyperboles with which Seinfeld and his team humorously bombard the senses, by intertwining tense political moments with the simple practice of consuming everyday breakfast pastries.

As a humorist, Seinfeld has always seemed captivating to me. From his famous sitcom to the present day, his impassive yet likeable face, even in the most outlandish extreme situations, adds a rhythmic plus to the comedy. To my taste as a viewer and consumer of humorous products, it's also a remarkable dramatic discovery the way he inserts black and political humor into an apparently "harmless" advertising war between two wealthy billionaire families.

It's not a film for children, of course; but after feasting your eyes and laughing so much and so often, you're seized by the desire to run to the supermarket, like those kids in the final scenes. It makes you want to feel seduced.

Las galletas Pop-Tarts, (unfrosted “sin glasear”), destinadas al desayuno infantil, son el resultado de una intensa competencia entre las poderosas compañías para cereales Kellog’s y Post durante el año 1963. Tales imperios económicos se entremezclaban con otros: los de la leche y el azúcar.

Edsel Kellog III y Marjorie Post pugnaron por ganar la preferencia del público infantil y, según Senfield, no escatimaron gastos ni ardides en el empeño: desde comprar toda la producción azucarera a un magnate latinoamericano (él), hasta negociar con Nikita Krushev (ella) para acceder a los centrales cubanos.

La ambiciosa comedia incluye todo tipo de escenas comunes a los filmes de espionaje, guerra fría, gánsteres, campañas políticas y revueltas sociales; pero más que nada, los parodia con habilidad y se completa incorporando situaciones humorísticas, personajes caricaturescos y diálogos bien elaborados y divertidos. Con tal contraste se consigue el equilibrio preciso para el desarrollo de una particular ironía sostenida durante 90 minutos.

En verdad, “una auténtica locura” con elenco de lujo: el propio Senfiel, Hugh Grant, Melissa McCarty, Christian Slater, entre otros adultos (pues la intervención de los tres niños manejando sus parlamentos y gestos es tan disfrutable como la de los grandes profesionales).

Es obvio que se pone en primer plano a un producto estrella de la compañía Kellog (las galletas Pop-Tarts), pero también se destacan —sobre todo a través de imágenes muy sugestivas y deliciosos diálogos anticlimáticos—, el estado de prosperidad de una época que muchos recuerdan como una edad dorada de la cultura pop.

La presencia de genios inventores, Andy Warhol, la expectativa del viaje a la luna, los autos clásicos y la constancia del sueño americano de clase media, con su chalet de césped y el carro de la leche a domicilio, tocan el lado nostálgico y familiar de un momento que ha sido recreado en otras películas recientes como Fly me to the moon y Barbie.

El regreso a la memoria emotiva de una vida más sencilla y más tranquila se configura en plenitud escénica a través de los vestidos y peinados, algunos de los ritmos que marcaron la historia musical, así como las hipérboles visuales con que Senfield y su equipo bombardean humorísticamente los sentidos, al entreverar momentos políticos álgidos con la sencilla práctica de consumir las confituras cotidianas para desayuno.

Senfield, como humorista, siempre me ha parecido cautivador. Desde su famosa sitcom hasta la actualidad, su rostro impasible, pero simpático, aún en las situaciones límite más descabelladas, le aporta un plus rítmico a la comedia. Para mi gusto como espectador y consumidor de productos humorísticos, es también un notable hallazgo dramático el modo en que inserta el humor negro y político en una aparentemente “inocua” guerra publicitaria entre dos grandes familias millonarias.

No es una película para niños, claro está; pero después de saborear con los ojos y reír tanto y tan a menudo, te asaltan los deseos de correr al supermercado, como esos niños de las últimas escenas. Te dan deseos de sentirte seducido.
