Film Review of Fear Street Prom Queen (2025)

After the success of Fear Street trilogy, Netflix had a follow up, Fear Street: Prom Queen in 2025. The movie returns fans to the town of Shadyside with another story inspired by R. L. Stine's books. While the movie shares the same world as the previous films, the movie is a stand alone story set in 1988.

Plot Summary

The movie was set during prom season at Shadyside High School. The film's main character is a girl named Lori Granger. She's an outsider whose family has long been the target of rumors and suspicion in the community. There is a tight competition for the title of Prom Queen. Meanwhile, several popular candidates begin disappearing under violent means. Two masked killers hunt the student candidates one by one. Lori is becoming a suspect so she must uncover who the real killer/killers are.

My Thoughts on the Movie

The movie is set in Shadyside, the setting of the original trilogy. Other than that, I can't connect the movie to the previous films. It's really made as a stand alone movie. The bad thing is, without much connection to the previous films, it's just another teenage slasher movie with a bit of mystery or who done it. Fans of the original who would like to visit Shadyside again might find this movie unfamiliar. It still has the over the top kills but there is no connection to witch craft that was the source of evil in the originals. I was expecting that the movie will feature one of the killer monsters in the original films but this movie has strayed far from it. Was it a good decision to make a stand alone film? For me who is a fan of the trilogy and expecting to return to its lore, no. This movie is just another teen slasher not much different from others before it. In my opinion, it should have stayed true to what made it a success.

If you like teen slasher movies then you will enjoy this film but if you are expecting this to have connections to the previous films, then you will be disappointed.
