Un jardín de palmeras / A garden of palm trees [Esp-Eng]
Hola, saludos a todo el mundo. Hace algunas semanas visisté un jardín de palmeras muy especial, el jardín Huerto del cura situado en el municipio de Elche, provincia de Alicante (España). A mediados del siglo XIX el jardín del que os hablo, era un huerto donde se cultivaba todo tipo de verduras, hortalizas, frutales y palmeras. Las palmeras ofrecían los nutritivos dátiles, además de servir para delimitar los huertos. Actualmente, ha dejado de ser un huerto para convertirse en un jardín privado que puede ser visitado. Se han mantenido las palmeras pero las verduras, hortalizas y frutales han sido sustituidos por plantas ornamentales mediterráneas y tropicales. Las palmeras, a día de hoy, son las protagonistas del jardín y del todo el municipio de Elche.

De entre todas las palmeras, hay una muy especial considerada la estrella del jardín y de todo el palmeral de Elche. En un principio fue conocida en la ciudad como el candelabro, pero tras la visita de la Emperatriz Elisabeth de Austria (Sissi) en 1894, pasó a ser llamada la Palmera Imperial. Este raro ejemplar de palmera (Phoenix Dactylifera) tenía la característica única de estar compuesta por 8 brazos. Ahora tiene 7 porque uno se secó en 2014. La Palmera Imperial es macho y tiene aproximadamente 180 años de edad.
Una de las cosas que más llama la atención, además de la Palmera Imperial, son las palmeras soportadas, es decir, aquellas que debido a su forma deben contar con un soporte que las mantenga en pie.

Hello, greetings to everybody. A few weeks ago I visited a very special palm garden, the Huerto del cura garden located in the municipality of Elche, province of Alicante (Spain). In the mid-nineteenth century the garden I am talking about was an orchard where all kinds of vegetables, fruit trees and palm trees were grown. The palm trees offered the nutritious dates, besides serving to delimit the orchards. Today, it is no longer an orchard but a private garden that can be visited. The palm trees have been maintained but the vegetables and fruit trees have been replaced by Mediterranean and tropical ornamental plants. The palm trees, nowadays, are the protagonists of the garden and of the whole municipality of Elche.

Among all the palm trees, there is a very special one considered the star of the garden and of the whole palm grove of Elche. At first it was known in the city as the candelabrum, but after the visit of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi) in 1894, it came to be called the Imperial Palm. This rare specimen of palm tree (Phoenix Dactylifera) had the unique characteristic of being composed of 8 arms. It now has 7 because one dried up in 2014. The Imperial Palm is male and is approximately 180 years old.

One of the most striking things, besides the Imperial Palm, are the supported palms, that is, those that due to their shape must have a support that keeps them standing.
