As we were returning from exploring the Hassafall waterfall in Hövslätt, the weather took a 360-degree turn. Yesterday had been sunny, but today was chilly and cloudy with a 80% chance of rain. Even so, we were determined to visit Brahehus castle ruins and see its beauty in the changing weather.
Brahehus located about 3km after Jönköping, the ruins were a romantic sight that we had witnessed before and were excited to share with our friends who were traveling with us.
We arrived at the ruins earlier than our friends, and while their kids were sleeping in the car, my friend decided to stay back with them. My family and my friend’s wife walked towards the ruins, and as we got closer, I couldn't help but think of it as the Swedish Taj Mahal. It was a fitting comparison for the ruins, which were a testament to a love that never saw completion.
The castle was built by Count Per Brahe the Younger in the 1650s as a tribute to his queen. It was meant to be a grand palace, a symbol of his love for his queen. Sadly, the castle was never completed due to Count Brahe's death.
According to the Jönköping Museum website,
the empty Brahehus was destroyed in a fire in 1708. The first restoration took place in the 1910s, and the most recent renovations were completed in 2012.
As we explored the ruins, the changing weather only added to the romantic atmosphere of the place. The chilly wind and light showers made the ruins seem even more mysterious and enchanting. It was easy to imagine the grandeur of the castle that would have been, had it been completed. The massive stone walls, the arches, and the towers provided a glimpse into the past, and we were transported back in time.
We were simply blown away by the incredible views from Brahehus. The stunning view all around us left us amazed and we couldn't help but feel that way. The huge windows provided views of the stunning Vättern Lake, and in front of the castle stood an exquisite island that only enhanced the already stunning surroundings. We spent quite some time taking in the view, and it was simply unforgettable.
Visiting the Brahehus ruins was a highlight of our road trip, and it was a pleasure to share the experience with our friends. Sometimes, it's not just the destination that matters, but the journey and the unexpected detours that make it all worth it.
