Contrasts of a Cuban pharmacy | [EN/ES]

Yesterday was a rainy day here in Cuba. Today, the sun has come out, and there's nothing better than taking advantage of it to go out and explore the city streets, perhaps rediscovering something new, which is always welcome.

So, while people are walking in one direction, I'm going in another, and I stop to invite them to take a look at the curious details of a unique pharmacy.

This building, advertised as a Drugstore Laboratory, is the La Campa Pharmacy, one of the oldest buildings in the province and at the same time, one of the oldest pharmacies in the central region of Cuba.

With its attractive and distinctive window display, this pharmacy was built in 1894 by the Escribano Pharmaceutical Corporation of Spain. From its inception, it was designed to sell medicinal products, perfumes, and gifts, which were advertised in the exterior windows in a manner similar to how it is today.

That's why the signs advertising items and products, which many would find quite striking, are so eye-catching.

Located on the corner of two of the city's main thoroughfares, it was originally built with masonry and tile. Its first owners were Spanish, and it became the largest pharmacy in the entire central region of the country and the best stocked with patent medicines and chemical products, offering a wide variety of products to the public. Even today, it is a pharmacy considered a benchmark for services in the province.

Since many are celebrating Christmas days around the world, it is worth remembering that in this pharmacy, at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, there was a gift and perfumery section that was in high demand on festive dates such as Christmas.

It always had these glass windows on its exterior where the products were displayed and invited people to enter the interior of the space to find a wonderful woodwork of high artistic and architectural value with neoclassical influence where a semi-coated parapet, its mosaic floor and ceilings that later required a great restoration process.

Interestingly, it was a much larger building. Originally, the pharmacy also housed what is now a bookstore and a cultural center, institutions we will visit later in more detail.

It was restored in 2018 by local artists in a process that cost $167,000, a rather high figure for the time, but luckily it seems that it has not been spent in vain as the essence of the place is still preserved.

At some point during the day it rained again, and I was lucky enough to attend a cultural event that I'll tell you about another time. Now, as evening falls and the day's colors transform, I'm taking the opportunity to show you, with different contrasts, the same route so you can enjoy it more calmly, especially now that there's incredible electricity in this part of the city.

Ayer fue un día lluvioso acá en Cuba. Hoy, ha salido el sol y nada mejor para aprovechar y salir a recorrer las calles de la ciudad para reparar en algún que otro redescubrimiento que siempre resulta bienvenido.

Así, mientras las personas transitan en una dirección, yo voy en otra y me detengo para invitarles a reparar en detalles curiosos de una singular farmacia.

Esta edificación, que se anuncia como un Laboratorio Droguería, es la Farmacia La Campa, una de las construcciones más antiguas de la provincia y a la vez, una de las farmacias más antiguas de la región central de Cuba.

Con un diseño atractivo y peculiar en sus vidrieras, esta farmacia fue construida en 1894 por la Corporación Farmacéutica Escribano S.A. de España. Desde sus inicios, fue concebida para vender productos medicinales, perfumería y regalos que se publicitaban en las vidrieras exteriores de un modo similar a como se ha retomado en la actualidad.

De ahí que nos llame la atención los carteles con anuncios y artículos que para muchos resultarían cuanto menos llamativos.

Ubicada en la esquina colindante de dos de las principales arterias viales de la urbe, fue construida originalmente con mampostería y tejas. Sus primeros dueños eran españoles y llegó a convertirse en la mayor farmacia de toda la zona central del país y la más abastecida en patentes y productos químicos manifiestos en disímiles ofertas para el público. Aún hoy, es una farmacia utilizada como referente de servicios para la población en la provincia.

Comoquiera que muchos están celebrando días navideños por el mundo, es justo recordar que en esta farmacia, en finales de siglo 19 y principios del siglo 20, existía una sección de regalos y perfumería que tenían gran demanda en fechas festivas como las navidades.

Siempre contó con estas vidrieras en su exterior donde se exhibían los productos e invitaba a ocupar el interior del espacio para entonces encontrar una maravillosa carpintería de altos valores artísticos y arquitectónicos con influencia neoclásica donde primaba un pretil semicalado, su piso de mosaicos y plafones que luego requirieron gran proceso de restauración.

Como curiosidad, podemos mencionar que era un edificio mucho más grande. Originalmente, a la farmacia, pertenecía también lo que hoy es una librería y un centro cultural, instituciones a las cuales luego visitaremos con más calma.

Fue restaurada en 2018 por artistas locales en un proceso que llegó a costar 167 000 dólares, una cifra bastante elevada para la fecha, pero que por suerte parece no ha sido gastada en vano pues aún se conserva la esencia del lugar.

En algún momento del día llovió nuevamente y tuve la suerte de asistir a una actividad cultural que contaré en otro momento. Ahora, aprovecho va cayendo la tarde y los colores del día se han transformado para mostrarles, con otros contrastes, el mismo recorrido y así puedan disfrutarlo con más calma en un momento donde hay electricidad increíblemente en esta parte de la ciudad.

Vuelve a nublarse el cielo y parece que la lluvia regresa. Entonces, debo despedirme pues no traigo sombrillas para guarecerme, pero antes, reciban todos ¡un abrazo de luz!
