Nativity scenes are one of most popular Christmas symbols in Slovenia. Look under the Christmas tree or around it …for sure there will be one in many Slovenian homes and churches.
Traditional figures are made from wood or plastic, but you will find many more innovative versions as well (from ceramics, glass, straw, etc…). Figures are placed on moss or some other natural materials like sand, stones, … some of them are real master pieces.
For many years now the nativity scenes have not only been set up inside people's homes, but you will find many of them also on the windows shelfs, in the squares or some other outside locations of Slovenian towns…
One of the most charming ones are in the small village of Vipavski Kriz. A tiny and charming village laying on a top of a hill in Vipava valley. Locals put the Nativity scenes in the streets, in front of their homes or in the windows. You can take a walk through the narrow streets and enjoy this peaceful atmosphere.
Some of the biggest nativity scenes were exhibited in the local wine cellar. They were really a piece of art composed by many small details.
