Hello Hivers, let’s take a look what’s going on this days in Ljubljana,…The weather is not very kind with us in these last December days, quite rainy and warm, instead of cold and snowy. But nothing can ruin our festivity spirit and we want for a walk in Ljubljana, in the old town illuminated by Christmas lights.
Ljubljana is the capital city of Slovenia. Known also as the green capital of a green country, it has a very vibrant and lively atmosphere. Compared to other European capitals it also has many architectural, cultural and historical sights, but it is one of the smallest and it is easily accessible on foot. The city lies under the castle hill and is embraced be the Ljubljanica river.
The castle gives a romantic note to the old town, but is also a nice location to be visited. It can be reached by foot or by funicular. There are many things you can do on the castle: they offer very interesting tours, like the Time machine tour, they have an escape room etc… but you can just simply enjoy the view of the city and have a meal in one of the two excellent restaurants located in the castle.
If you will visit Ljubljana, stroll along the cobbled street of the old town, pass the Preseren square and the Congress square, enter into the small streets, talk with locals on the open market, walk along the river banks and enjoy your time in one of the numerous cafes by the river. Cross few of the bridges in the old town- the most popular are the ˝Three Bridges˝ and the ˝Dragon bridge˝ (the dragon is also the symbol of the city.)
By one explanation the origins of name Ljubljana (quite difficult pronunciation if you don’t know Slovenian language) derivates from a Slovenian word for ˝beloved˝ - and yes, you will easily fall in love with this city.
In December Ljubljana is even more cosy with Christmas light and decoration. As you can see from the photos the decoration is different, abstract, or I can even say unusual. This unusual decoration started more than 20 years ago and was prepared by a famous Slovenian artist. It represents the universe around us with galaxies, planets, comets, geometric shapes, DNA structure, … etc. From year to year the decoration evolves but maintains the same theme.
My favourite part of the decoration are the meteors on Slovenska street….
… and the Christmas tree in the town hall that is every year decorated by children from one of Ljubljana’s schools, made from recycled materials.
Hope you've enjoyed the city tour 😊
