Gold Mining in Julian, CA [EN/PT-BR]

Julian is a mountain town located in the Cuyamaca Mountains, San Diego County. It is also a California Historical Landmark. Today a lot of people go there for a weekend getaway in the mountains and for their famous apple pies. But the history of Julian goes way back to the gold rush, when gold was first found in a creek in 1869 and a lot of people rushed to the area. After the end of the gold rush, a lot of towns where abandoned and became ghost towns, but Julian survived as it was a great place to grow apples and now is super famous for it's apple pies.

This weekend I visited an old gold mine in Julian. Eagle Mining Co. was established in 1870 and was in operation until 1934, when gold price dropped and the operations were not profitable anymore. After the death of the original owner, the tunnels had to be buried to keep people out. Then in 1968 a couple bought the land, reopened the tunnels and started to do tours, educating people about the gold rush.

Julian é uma cidade na serra localizada nas montanhas Cuyamaca, condado de San Diego. É também um marco histórico na California. Hoje em dia muita gente vai para lá aproveitar o final de semana nas montanhas e também pela famosa torta de maçã. Mas a história de Julian começou muito antes, durante a corrida do ouro, quando ouro foi encontrado pela primeira vez num riacho em 1869, e muita gente se mudou para esta região. Com o fim da corrida do ouro, muitas cidades foram abandonadas e viraram cidades fantasma, mas Julian sobreviveu pois descobriram que era um lugar excelente para cultivar maçãs, e hoje ficou famosa por suas tortas de maçã.

Este final de semana eu visitei uma velha mina de ouro em Julian. Eagle Mining Co. foi fundada em 1870 e ficou em operação até 1934, quando o preço do ouro caiu muito e as operações da mina não eram mais lucrativas. Depois da morte do dono original, os tuneis foram soterrados para evitar que pessoas entrassem nas minas. Depois em 1968, um casal comprou a propriedade onde esta a mina e reabriu os tuneis para turismo, com passeios pela mina, educando as pessoas sobre a corrida do ouro.

The mine is located just 5 minutes from downtown Julian and the main street. When you get there you can see the big Californian five-stamp mill. This mill was built 1872 and was used to process ores and extract gold. It had a capacity of processing 10 tons of quartz, and produced at least 10 ounces of gold every 24hrs.

A mina fica localizada somente a 5 minutos do centro de Julian e da rua principal. Logo quando voce chega, pode ver um grande moinho. Este moinho foi fabricado em 1872 e era usado para triturar o minério de quartzo e extrair o ouro. Tinha uma capacidade de processar 10 toneladas de quartzo e produzir pelo menos 10 onças de outro a cada 24 horas.

They have a nice picnic area, a livery stable that was turned into a museum, some gold panning bins where they demonstrate how to pan gold and a gift shop. There are also a lot of antiques, old equipment, trucks and cars. You need to pay for your visit at the gift shop, then you can get a guided tour.

Eles tem uma ótima área de picnic, um antigo estábulo, uma area para demostrar o garimpo do ouro e uma loja de presentes. Tem também varias antiguidades, equipamentos, tratores e carros antigos. Voce precisa pagar por sua visita na loja, e depois voce assiste um tour guiado.

The mine is really big, has a lot of levels and it is more then 400 feet deep. We can only visit one level, and it is a bit claustrophobic. Some parts you have to pay attention and duck down not to hit your head on the rocks. Inside the mine you can see the tracks for the carts used to bring the quartz out of the mine, and there are still a lot of equipment in there. The tour is very interesting, and you can try to imagine what it was to work in there only with candle lights. Eagle Mine connects with another mine called High Peak Mine, and the tour ends there.

A mina é muito grande, tem diversos níveis e mais de 100 metros de profundidade. Nós só podemos visitar um andar, e da um pouco de claustrofobia. Em algumas partes é necessário ter atenção e se abaixar para não bater com a cabeça nas pedras. Dentro da mina voce pode ver os trilhos dos carros usados para retirar as pedras de quartzo, e ainda é possível ver uma boa quantidade de equipamentos lá dentro. O tour é muito interessante, e ficamos imaginando como seria trabalhar dentro desta mina apenas com luzes de velas. A Eagle Mine se conecta com outra mina chamada High Peak Mine, e nós saímos por lá.

This is a very interesting place to visit, and we had a lot of fun going there. After visiting the mine we went to the main street to get some apple pie. You can't go to Julian an not eat some of the famous apple pie.

Este é um lugar bem interessante para se visitar, nós nos divertimos bastante lá. Depois de visitar a mina, nós fomos para a rua principal comprar uma torta de maçã. Afinal, não da para ir para Julian e não comer uma famosa torta de maçã.
