Stepping Back in Time: Exploring the History of Cebu

The National Museum of Cebu is quite big. In fact, there’s even a second floor, but unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to visit it because I was running out of time.

This is Part 3 of my exploration of the museum. In Part 2 , I featured Cebu’s wild forests and marine life. This time, I’m taking you back to old Cebu, showcasing some of the historical artifacts and objects that give us a glimpse into how people lived and what they used in the past.

After checking out the last part of the marine life exhibit, where the whale shark was displayed, we simply followed the open door since that was the direction we were instructed to take.

As we entered, the first thing that caught my attention was this map of Cebu City, dated 1699. It looks like it was drawn entirely by hand, which makes sense considering there were no computers back then.

Beside the map was a very tall tarpaulin containing information about Old Cebu and its cultural heritage.

We get to learn about Cebu’s past through the different objects and artifacts discovered by archaeologists in various parts of Cebu. These discoveries give us a glimpse of what life was like in Cebu long ago, and many of these historical pieces are now preserved and displayed in the museum for visitors to see.

It’s amazing to think that these simple objects can tell us so much about Cebu’s history and the people who lived here centuries ago.

One of the interesting pieces on display was a secondary burial jar with a cover, carefully preserved inside a glass cabinet.

This particular jar was discovered in San Remigio, Cebu, a municipality located in the northern part of the province, known for its beautiful white-sand beaches.

It’s fascinating to see how even an ancient burial jar can give us a glimpse into the practices and beliefs of the people who lived in Cebu long ago.

Another interesting item on display was a buffalo bone. The information on the display identified it as an “Unidentified Buffalo,” and it was discovered in Carcar, Cebu.

Carcar is located in the southern part of Cebu and is well known for its delicious chicharon.

It’s interesting to see how discoveries like this can also become part of Cebu’s history and help us learn more about the animals and environment that existed here in the past.

I also noticed some seashells on display, and I couldn’t help but wonder why they were included in this section instead of being displayed with the marine life exhibits.

At first, I thought, “Why are these seashells here? Shouldn’t they be part of the marine life section?”

Well, I’m sure there’s a reason why they chose to include them here. Maybe they’re also connected to the history and archaeological discoveries of Cebu.

When I looked over to the other side, I saw so many different kinds of pots on display. According to the information provided, most of them were discovered in San Remigio, Cebu.

It looks like they found quite a lot of archaeological artifacts in San Remigio. It’s interesting to see how these old pots have become part of the story of Cebu’s past.

On another side, I found some old kitchenware, including an ewer, saucer, bowl, and other household items.

It’s interesting to see these simple everyday objects and imagine how they were used by people in Cebu long ago.

And with that, I’ll end this part of my museum visit.
