Last summer we wanted to do some sightseeing in the beautiful city of Bilbao in Spain.
When we drove into the city over the bridge we immediately noticed the enormous silver colored building of the Guggenheim museum.
We're not that into art and especially not contemporary art, but the Guggenheim museum is something special.
And since it was 36 degrees and the museum was cool, our teenage daughters agreed to visit the museum. Luckily we didn't have to pay for them.
On the inside it was cool indeed. The museum is huge and the interior is made from many different materials; metal, glass, stone... They have also used a lot of round shapes.
On the ground floor they have a large hall with some big metal walls. It made me think of a maze.
It was funny to watch people walk into some of the dead-end structures finding out they had to turn around to get out.
There are many different exposition rooms. As I already mentioned before I'm not a particular fan of contemporary art, but I do like pop-art. This painting by Roy Lichtenstein is called Grrrrrr!!
There is also some bizarre art. This "Daddy, daddy" by Maurizio Cattelan is kind of cruel.
These balloon-like objects made me think a bit of tulips.
And there is also a lot of art pieces I really don't understand like this 'chalk board' where the artist 'forgot' to paint the lower left corner.
There was another room with a lot of 'paintings' on cardboard. These paintings are not my cup of tea. I always think that kids could do better than that π
There was an interesting temporary exposition by Yoshitomo Nara. This artist makes a lot of paintings and other art objects all starring little girls. They all look a bit the same, but all were different.
Some were sweet like the one above, some were more cruel like the one below. Our youngest daughter really liked this one, the rebel she is π
My wife really liked the following one. We ended up buying a poster of the following painting in the museum shop afterwards.
Outside the museum are also a couple of interesting pieces of art like this giant flower puppy that is standing in front of the museum.
Despite the fact that we're not that into contemporary art we did enjoy the museum. We didn't like all the art, but there were certainly some pieces of art we did like.
I hope you liked my blog about the Guggenheim Museum.

Nice series, the doggy is so beautyfull in flowers. When I was there he had his winter coat on π
Thanks! I did wonder how it looked in winter π
I think I have a picture of it here somewhere π
How interesting your visit to the Guggenheim in Bilbao! I love how you described the experience and the different types of art. Definitely a place worth exploring, even if weβre not big fans of contemporary art!
Yes, it was more interesting than I had expected.
The Guggenheim museums are such amazing designs
I guess art is a matter of perspective some I love and some I just scratch my head and wonder
Is that balloon piece by Jeff Koons I love his style
Oh, thanks for telling me his name. Although the name doesn't ring a bell π
The 'balloons' are nice and colorful. That's a piece of art that had cost the artist some time to create. I doubt about that with some paintings π
YEah I still have that chalkboard one in my mind, just dont see how much thought and effort went into that
My mum went there some years ago I was so jealous I always want to visit this museum , it's so interesting!
We went to Bilbao because we were in the neighborhood. We actually decided to visit the museum when we drove past it. But we didn't regret visiting it.
