Hmmm! That moment!
So blurry, yet however crystal,
still lingers in my head like a rhythm,
filling my every thoughts with
booming regrets.
If only I could see it coming,
If only I could turn back time.
All I hold dear is: "If"
Perhaps it has been
my every day companion.
It was a quiet afternoon,
warm like the Lagos sun,
when that moment came—
soft, unsure, yet full of promises.
I felt it near,
like the wind in harmattan,
brushing my cheek,
kissing my eyes; however,
distracting my vision from each step.
But then, I waited. I always have waited.
Fear wrapped me gently,
It enveloped me like a thick fog,
blinding me from hope,
like an elder,
with knowing eyes.
"It said, 'Happy! not yet, you are not ready,'"
and silly me, so trusty I appear,
believing its every word like a child
clinging to bedtime haunting lullaby stories.
Hoping I can just still the time,
sadly, time never waits,
definitely not.
Sometimes it was fear,
or should I say "doubt?!"
However, other times, I do not know what even held me.
A stillness? A weight? A shadow?
Perhaps just the weight of my
humble thoughts, I guess.
Never knowing the unclear,
never ascertaining the silence,
never piercing the doubts,
never about the vogue,
never seeing the obvious,
never shaped by trends,
wishing for the impossible,
hmmm not quite, not really.
Truly choked and teary.
The opportunity passed me like
a bus I waved at too late
and just stood dumbfounded,
watching it disappear like
a mist at dawn—there, then
gone without a trace.
Like smoke from a dying flame,
silent and inevitable.
like a dream slipping through
the crack of waking.
Painful, though, but always lingering.
I stood there, confused and tired,
holding nothing; It is exhausting
listening to the silence it left me.
Now, there was the moment
I had,
heavens granted it;
that time, It was that I have never had,
and it is now here.
That moment changed everything.
Now, what remains are regrets;
acceptance is now my own.
And a leason carved deep—
in the language of
what could have actually been
Is now too late, eventually.

A wonderful poem. You caught the essence of the prompt in many novel ways, especially the lifetime regrets and pain. Bravo!!
