Puzzled, Adrain the Mafia boss asked why would Sam shield Roger with his life when are not related by blood and mere friends.

They supported each other through the tough training, listen to and supported each other through ups and downs and celebrated various milestone.
They grew to be each other's shadow. They understand each other with an exchange of a glance. They formed a plan.
Thus, undoubtedly in a moment of life and death, there's no question one would lay down his life for the other.
