Drifting, it can be a physical activity that can be relaxing or dangerous. Likewise, drifting can be done mentally with one being in a stable or motionless physical state. I believe everyone would have drifted mentally more than physically. I also think one could be unaware that they are drifting or have drifted. I will explain in detail later.
For physical drifting, it is obvious and can be noticed quickly. But 1 condition needs to be present. We need to have a medium or a large quantities to be present. Let's take the following example to illustrate: if you are swimming along a lane, if you are drifting away from the center of the lane, without a lane divider, it would be hard to tell. But measuring against a divider, it would be quick to tell as your distance to the divider. Or when you are separated from a group.
Mental drifting would usually occur when one don't follow in a group discussion and when one lost interest. This occurs in the class more often when the student is in a class of a subject that he don't enjoy. One would drift into his or her dream.
Thus, it can be true when one tells you I am just drifting.
