It was market day, and I had just enough money left to buy one head of lettuce. Prices of things had gone up again, so I use the little money I had wisely. I bought some important things I needed and excluded the less important ones. I’d planned a light dinner with my favorite salad.
But just as I got home, my younger brother burst through the door, the looked worn-out. He said “ I'm terribly hungry”
I said nothing but nodded. I knew that look. It didn't need much talk. All he needed was food. And somehow, for us, comfort was always food.
So I went into the kitchen and changed the plan. I chopped the tomatoes, sliced the onions, added a pinch of pepper, and sacrificed the lettuce, my last one, into pieces.
When it was done, I placed the plate in front of him, his face was softened. He ate in silence, but I saw relief in his eyes.
That night, I didn’t eat salad as I planned. But I didn’t mind.
Sometimes, loving someone means giving up the one thing you were saving for yourself. I had sacrificed the lettuce. And it was worth it.
