Some days start well and some don't. Today feels like both. I sigh, and glance up from my computer just as Amelia struts in like she’s on a runway.
Oh no. I should change my cup of tea to a cup of strong coffee.
She's been on her one-month annual leave and the entire staff has enjoyed rare peace and quiet. Now she's back. I glimpse a few of the security men exhaling like they are bracing for impact.
Amelia isn't exactly a bomb but she keeps things lively. That is, until she overdoes it and you feel like strangling her, or at least sending her out of the room.
Just then Dr Carter Bello steps out of a patient's room. He's a newly transferred cardiovascular surgeon on consultation from Marseille. Young and handsome, he carries himself like he has no time for nonsense. The nurses have taken a bet about who will be the first to crack his ‘high and mighty’ wall.
“Carol, I'll take a tea break now,” he says, walking up to my desk. “I’ll check on the patient in room 207 when I return. Yeah?”
I smile and nod. “Sure, Carter.”
“Carol baby!” Amelia screeches like a banshee, her arms stretched out towards me as if we've been apart for a decade. Carter glances at her, frowns and walks away.
She side-hugs me but her eyes are on the handsome doctor.
“Uh, no,” I mutter. “Don't even think about it.”
“What do you mean?” She asks, faking innocence.
“He doesn't take shit from anyone. So don't,” I reply, scowling to get my message across.
She waves me off. “Oh, please. No one can resist my charm. Not even Doctor Handsome.”
I shake my head and go back to my work.
An hour later, a sharp voice from room 207 cuts through the reception. “C'est pas tes oignons!”
Oh no! Doctor Carter rarely speaks French unless he is really pissed. I scramble out of my chair, down the hallway to room 207. I push the door open.
Amelia stands there holding the patient's chart, her eyes, wide and puppy-like, gazing at Carter. “I have no idea what that means?” She says and blinks.
I swear Carter looks like he might combust. He steps close to her and speaks through his teeth. “It means not your onions! None of your business, nurse. Why are you even here? You're not assigned to this patient.”
“Nurse Ralia is on a quick break. I'm just helping—”
I quickly step in, seeing the patient is getting uncomfortable. “Ah, Amelia you are needed in another room,” I say, cutting her off. “Sorry about this, Carter.”
I take the chart from her and hand it to the him, then gently steer her out of the room. Amelia winks and blows him a kiss. Carter's eyes are wide in disbelief as we leave.
Oh no. I hope this doesn't become a daily episode.

I've been watching a medical drama series...so. I hope you enjoyed reading this short piece. It's inspired by the Freewrite #dailyprompt phrase "not your onions!".
Thank you for visiting my blog.
