You know one thing about misfortunes? They neither inform nor spare you. They can happen over again with no inscription on your head that pleads for you to be spared.
With my bottle of alcohol, I sat down in the sitting room, feeling depressed and dejected. I can't help but wonder what crime I had committed for all these misfortunes to befall me in the space of two days.
Where did I go wrong? Who did I offend? How did it become so bad? How? How?" I asked no one in particular.
The past few days will go down as the days when I contemplated ending it all. For the very first time in my life, I gave such a ridiculous idea a thought.
My former employer had terminated my contract for no just cause and my colleagues weren’t spared either. Yes, it was bad, yes, it was exhausting. The thought of looking for a job scares me, not after what I had to go through before landing this one.
How do I begin to send in numerous applications with the hopes that the hiring managers will be kind enough to grant me an interview, but regardless of how I felt, I knew better than to throw in the towel too soon.
I got home that day and updated my CV. If I was going to land a job as fast as possible I needed to start applying already.
I applied for a couple of jobs and decided to go out the next day for a proper job hunt.
The next day came and I swung into action. I visited a couple of firms, submitted my CV, and was advised to wait for their call. I felt a little better that I had positive feedback from these companies and it encouraged me not to resign myself to faith.
On my way home after job hunting the worst happened. One I was never prepared for. I was robbed, my phone and laptop were snatched by one of the robbers who was wearing a scary mask.
"Give me that!!” He yelled, pressing the gun to my head.
In a split second, I handed them to him with no hesitation. I was too scared to protest and too shocked to even breathe.
After the robbery, I came down from the bus and had to trek back home.
It was a long walk, one that was filled with so much pain.
After what took forever I got home. I entered my apartment with no idea of how I was going to navigate life without the two gadgets that were supposed to help change my unemployment status.
Before I could change my clothes to shower, I heard a loud bang on my door.
"Leo! Leo! Leo!" came my neighbour's voice.
“Yes, what’s the problem?” I replied from inside.
“Your wife fainted in the market and we rushed her to the hospital,” my neighbor said frantically.
“My wife what?” I asked, not being able to process what I was hearing.
“She fainted and was rushed to the hospital,” my neighbor repeated.
“Oh Jesus! My God!” I screamed, panicked paced nonstop.
I wordlessly followed my neighbour to the hospital and the sight that greeted me was nothing to write home about.
I was finally convinced that the universe was definitely making me pay for my sins.
