In the context of the succession planning, there is always this phase of trying to find out who is able to rise up to the challenge and take over as the next leader. However, this process tend to be flawed because whenever such activity is being conducted, there are many bias or unseen truth which is not seen by the assessors. And with all these being considered, the leadership that had been built up is usually a bunch of showy people or people who know when to showcase themselves.
This is a severe danger for any organisation and will start a downward spiral of losing potentially good leaders and celebrating weak leaders whom are without any substance. I've seen that in my company and with every of such bad promotions, it will always be tagged along with an equal number of attrition and eventually, we are looking a big time loss in knowledge just to satisfy a single promotion.
Is it really worth it or we really need to do deeper studies on succession planning before making a wrong decision?
