Eight-year-old Amanda used to be the loudest in the room. She loved answering questions in class, and joking with her friends.

She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, even when the adults were around.

On her way home from school, Amanda saw something she wasn’t supposed to. A group of older boys from her neighborhood were stealing from a small shop.

She knew them by name.

So, when the shopkeeper asked who had taken the missing items, Amanda, being the honest girl she was, spoke up.

That night, the boys found her alone outside her house.

“Snitch,” they called her.

They didn’t hurt her, but their threats were enough. ”Tell on us again, and we’ll make sure you regret it.”

At that moment, Amanda lost something she never thought she could lose. She lost courage.

From then on, she was no longer the girl who spoke her mind. She had lost her courage, and with it, her voice.

At school, she no longer raised her hand.
At home, she gave short replies.

The teacher demanded to know the truth, and only Amanda knew the real culprit. But the memory of those boys’ voices refused to leave her head.

She wanted to stay silent. It was safer that way. But then she saw the tears in her friend’s eyes.

Taking a deep breath, Amanda slowly stood up.

She spoke in a trembling voice. “It wasn’t her. I know who did it.”
