5-min Freewrite: Grandma vs. The Internet
“Password incorrect. Try again.”
Grandma squinted at the screen, adjusting her glasses. “I know my password,” she muttered, jabbing the keyboard with her index finger.
”It’s JesusIsLord123!”
She hit enter.
“Password incorrect. Try again.”
“Ah-ah! This thing must be possessed.”
She reached for the house phone and called her best friend, Joyce.
*“Joy, I’ve been locked out of my account.”
“You mean on Facebook?”
“Yes! They said my password is wrong, but I’ve been using the same one since 2015. Do these people think I forgot that Jesus is Lord?”
“Maybe someone hacked you.”
Grandma gasped. ”Blood of Jesus! But why would someone hack a 72-year-old woman?”
“Did you click on anything suspicious?”
“I only opened a message from one fine young man. He said I won a giveaway of one million naira! I even gave him my account details to claim it.”
A shocked exclamation came from the other end of the line. “Ewooo!… you’ve been scammed.”
Grandma went silent. Then, “Joyce, let’s not jump to conclusions. Maybe the boy is still processing my money.”
Before Joyce could respond, a WhatsApp message popped up on grandma’s phone from her grandson, Kene.
Kene: Grandma, why are you asking people on Facebook for urgent 2k?
Grandma clutched her chest. “Ha! They’ve stolen my identity!”
Joyce gasped. “They’re even using your account to beg for money?”
“Yes! And they’re not even aiming high. Only 2,000 naira?! At least ask for 50k!”
